Current lead time on PTG custom reamers?

Heck yea! Who's making your reamer?

And are you going to keep the base to shoulder/body length the same and drop the neck/shoulder to make the 40 or are you going to keep the neck/body junction in the same spot and just move the shoulder/body junction forward?

I was considering doing the first option to get myself more neck length, but then I'd end up pushing shoulder material into the neck and have to deal with donuts and I wouldn't get that extra 0.001gr capacity ;)

Would you mind sharing your print with me? I've been wondering about that base to neck/shoulder junction dimension for a 284win. I think the 30-284 prints I've been looking at already have that dimension shortened to increase neck length on the 30
 
284win saami is about 0.016 body taper per inch. 284shehane is about 0.010 per inch and from what I've seen 0.007-0.010 is minimum for reliable extraction (recommended by JE in an older thread I believe). I haven't seen any reports of sticky extractions with it.

Don't go under 0.010 in a hunting rifle.

Sounds like a fun project at least.

I don't know...that's the norm for magnum wildcats. You don't gain enough volume on smaller cases to justify the risk imo.

You'll spend $300+ to gain 2gr of capacity...if that's worth it to you then by all means let her eat!
 
Not to pour water on your idea but why not just build a 300 SAUM? Send a dummy round to Manson or JGS with the bullet seated where you want it and gain 3gr + capacity over your Shehane then you don't need special dies.

I have thought about that, or even going with the 300 Sherman short since his brass no longer requires fire forming and case capacity would be very close to this, but I am wanting to stay with the .473 case head.

I don't currently have a magnum but when I get one, I want it to be a real laser or something that is always readily available like a RUM or Win mag.

That is a very logical question though. Part of it is that I want something different :)

Then build your own wildcat like a .30 Tac-O or something and do not worry about what others think about your build. This is why I never ask what rifle to build or buy. Good luck.
 
Tried to rent a reamer and got the runaround and they would not respond until I called my credit card company so I bought a new reamer from ptg.was told mid November I called and talked to Matt and I was told it will be about 2 more weeks but it did sound like they were working on something in the background. I have had this problem with one of the others also.I will say this I have several ptg products and they all seem to be good quality and they will answer the phone.pay Moore wait longer and be happy

In addition to Manson chamber reamer, buy a Manson resizer reamer ($215), a ptg die blank ($21), have sizer made ($50)

Only buy the Manson chamber reamer, have Hornady make a sizing die off that reamer print ($165 + couple extra months lead time) - not sure I'd want to have die made off FF cases because it would add 4 extra months and not sure if a single ffireforming would get the case close enough to make the sizing die more accurate.

So option #2 saves me a good chunk of money but adds lead time and maybe the die wouldn't be quite as accurate as having my own resizer reamer. I'm not sure if I would ever use that resizer reamer again but maybe once or twice, but could rent it out to anyone that might want to do this same cartridge.

What would y'all do?

Ill add my experience if it helps. Tried PTG and after weeks of emails and phone calls, each one being like groundhog day, I gave up and went with JGS at the advice of several respected members here on the forum.

Great advice! JGS was on time and everything was as it should be.

To solve the custom die/reamer match issues, I reverse engineered the process by sending them a few dummy rounds sized by the die I currently have on hand (Standard Redding set) along with the bullet I wanted to shoot, seated to the desired depth. JGS created the reamer based off the dummy round. It is incredibly accurate, easy to load and the tight tolerances have extended my brass life. BTW its a 7RM shooting the Berger 175 Elite Hunter.

I'm going resize reamer route.
You can build a shoulder bump/necksize die with the chamber reamer if that would suit your needs.
I've always wondered why you couldn't just stop the reamer .002-.004" short of where you chambered the barrel?

Is it gonna size the .200 line properly, enough of the neck.
Theres more to making a resizing reamer than just using a reamer you have to harden it also.

You'd be barely sizing the .200 line but in my mind it wouldn't allow it to grow. You'd have to do it in a bushing die body to allow it to size the neck at all
You don't have to harden a die it will just last longer.
