264 Win Mag 156 Berger EOL

Well I wasn't able to get to the range these days off to shoot unfortunately. I have a few rifles to shoot so I need to get out for sure.

Heard back from Berger today and they had more info.

264Win Mag 156 Berger EOL 26" bbl 3.340" COAL
He didn't mention which primer and didn't think to ask

RL23- 56.5 2745 fps
59.3 2854 fps 90% case fill. Max

H1000- 61.5 2796 fps
64.6 2934 fps 97% case fill. Max

Retumbo- 64 2829 fps
67.5 2975 fps 100% case fill. Max

They did not or would not try RL26 due to too much empty space left in case and didn't want to chance a potential detonation.
From my experience Berger's numbers tend to be very conservative.

I would expect better velocities than shown there unless you have a short tube.

I heard somewhere that their data is simply quick load data, with everything set to be conservative. Not 100% sure on that, but it would make sense, everything I have seen is really, really conservative. Almost to the point I don't find their data very useful. You can get relatively close to those velocities they listed with the 156 and a 6.5 creed, so ya....

When I spoke to them a couple of years back they flat out told me the numbers they were giving me were from QuickLoad. They didn't say how conservative. I much prefer using QuickLoad myself, so I can adjust e.g. COAL and barrel length to get the best possible estimate of my actual maximum pressure for a given charge weight and bullet.

That sounds about right. Ya, I have seen others throw put QL data on the .264 wm and the 156, with a 26" pretty much all of them get to 3100 or close with Retumbo.

They will tell you to run RL23 but not RL26 because of not enough case fill??? That sounds backwards. RL26 is a bit slower burning and would think have more case fill. It's up there with H1000 and such.

Those are not even close to max loads. QL calculates their max load of RL23 to only be 89.9% fill and 4k psi under max pressure. The velocity is pretty close but IMO RL23 is too fast.

RL26 also calculated to be too fast. It hits max pressure at 63.2 grains/87% case fill/3000fps/100% powder burn inside the barrel.

RL33 calculates 73.4 grains/100.3% fill/3086fps/99.61% powder burn inside barrel.

H1000 calculates 66.2 grains/99.2% fill/3002fps/100% powder burn inside barrel.

Retumbo calculates 69.2 grains/102% fill/3043fps/100% powder burn inside barrel.

Viht N568 calculates 69.1 grains/98.2% fill/3056fps/99.97% powder burn inside barrel.

Viht N570 calculates 70 grains/98.4% fill/3096fps/99.42% powder burn inside barrel.

All of these are max loads and assumes a 26" barrel and COAL of 3.340. Case capacity at 82 grains of H2O.

I personally would not even consider RL23, 26 or H1000.

My preferred would be Retumbo, N568 and N570.

When I get QL up and running again I'll check n570, but last I remember I didn't get as much burn completion. I've tried readjusting 150smk, but haven't tried 156eol. With up too 106% fill in some powders (testing QL only against my known figures for 140Spbt w/imr4831), QL #s don't equal. I've run 61.3gr of imr4831 in a pre '64 mod70 for over 20 years at sierra #5 coal with win superX brass. How many think QL is at least 90+% close? After I get the headspace set on the new build I'll check coal for testing after the July 2021 update gets installed. I'm way behind!

So it looks like I am the only one running 8133 with the 156's..I tried all the others and it was simply the best in my rifle.. I get 3070 and find that it gets the job done.. Try it. ;)

I was told the same thing last month.

my 264's are built spec'd for the 156 only @ 3.590" touch lands base too tip and I run them .025" off 76.5 -77.8 RL33 26"bartlein 8 twist's norma brass, cci 250 3164fps with really no trouble getting there.. could run it harder

Elk Hunter338, turkey4090,

Do either of you have reamer print you could send me of the reamer used for your rifles?
