Hey so my son has expressed Interest in hunting with me. What would be a good caliber to start him off with. He's 10 almost 5' and 106lbs.

Thanks.

All depends on his skill set and minimum caliber requirements. I'm not joking at all when I say I would use a .223 or similar. Load it with a 60gr Partition and he will drop them like a hot plate. Bullet is critical and a good hold together bullet is important as most are designed to blow up regardless of their weight. If you have a minimum caliber by law requirement go with a cartridge in that diameter and load it down in velocity. I am absolutely partial to the Partition, and the old standard Hornady Interlock and Remington Core Lok are very consistent performing bullets above 22cal. Even in 22 if you get a double lung perfect broadside the standard bullets will work great. I just shoot bullets that I know will expand and penetrate lips to arse if that is the shot I have and I want the animal.

My youngest son is going for his first hunt on the day after Christmas (cow elk in Gila Wilderness). I took him to the range and let him shoot a variety of decent caliber rifles for the animal he was hunting. I didn't tell him what he was shooting, I just let him shoot in his favorite stance and gave him 5 rounds for each. We went through a couple of .30-06's, a smaller .300 Win Mag., and several others. His two favs? A customized Arisaka 7.7 Jap and his grandfather's Weatherby Vanguard in 270 Win. (he didn't know it was Papa's before he shot it). He settled on the 270 and I have taken him out three times since to shoot off a couple of boxes each time to get used to the gun and hone his aim.

That's a pretty cool
Method I like it!

6.5 cm or 6.5 prc, both are very light recoiling and have great ballistics. It will be something he can grow into and wont be under caliber for later in life. Wide selection of bullets such as 155 megas for moose, 130 berger hybrids for deer, 143 eldx for elk. You can tune everything for what he's hunting. Just buy a tikka, it wont break your wallet, shoots great out of the box and you can upgrade parts and barrels down the road.
