Short barreled 7mm ??? Help me pick - people with experience please

Bingo Cody, I'd be all over the 28 Noz.

I have been using the 28 Noz from the mid 50's and 60's called the 7 Mashburn Super for close to 3 decades. I do love me the big 28's!

Go 8 twist, cut to the length you desire and get to rocking the world!
When I was in gun sales my boss Glenn Slade hunted Polar Bears with a 16 in 7 rem mag Sako Finnbear I loaded 160 gr Nosler Partitions He cut it short so it was easy too get out of the cockpit of the air plane they used too locate the Bears so I guess it depends on the use 16in was minimal legal length it must have worked because he had Polar Bears in the Trophy Room

Not even going too get started on those pod cast's and their ridiculous numbers! nothing like downplaying too make others look great! 🤣🤣

I've built them all and if your stuck on a 7mm cal
build the 28 nosler 20" barrel 8 twist
its carbon so the brake will be awesome because of size, id run the Ti pro 3 self timer
I would run the 180 hybrid or 175 elite hunter .. hell I have guys running the 195 that are in love with that combo!
long action so it will feed like butter
recoil will be about like a non broke 22-250...
What would be realistic numbers running the 28 Nosler with say, 180s' in a 20" tube? Not my thread, but curious and hopefully it gives Cody something to use.

Another consideration, is my father in law will not put a ton of rounds through this gun, it is a hunting rifle. Even at 750 round barrel life, I would estimate he will get 10+ years of use out of it. So barrel life isn't really a concern. With a good brake, the extra recoil won't really exist. He is used to shooting a 45-70 guide gun, so I suspect he isn't recoil shy. Starting to lean this way.

with a longer barrel for sure, and I say this not having used the 28 Noz but have a ton load experience with the Mash.

You could well be right, but 3K with a 180 out of a 20" tube seems to me like one would be horn honking on it pretty hard. But, I've been wrong tons before and sure will be more so in the future I'm sure.

Speeds and what one will get is always all over the place as some don't mind red lining the beans out of a round and feel comfy in doing some and some are considerably more conservative.

Nosler is at 3K with a 26" barrel and a 185. Subtract 25 per inch for 6" and that will land one in the 2850 range ish..........

Just the way I think

lets just say you'll see over 3k with very little effort with the 180 in a 20". Im doing another right now ill have even more numbers on it if the weather freakin cooperates ..

just for reference my 20" 300 rum shoots a 215 sluggishly @3000fps h1k with room for gains

everything comes at a cost .. everyone wants the top fuel dragster performance with the prius gas bill!

it takes horsepower too achieve said goals .. small cases are just that.... too small!!

the internet has piles of "numbers" guys are getting I'm basing my data off of actually seeing, doing and testing!!!

If the only parameter is barrel length, then a short fat magnum is the answer.
The Nosler case is just gonna burn powder outside the barrel….if this doesn't bother you then go for it.
I have been down this road for customers, 99% of the time with a 20" barrel, either the WSM or SAUM were chosen.
Sure, you are already set up for the Sherman Max….why not just stick with this round?
I have done 2 20" barreled 270 Weatherby's, neither of them ran any faster than a normal 270 Winchester. This would have been different if the WSM case had been used IMHO. Couldn't talk them out of their decision due to parameters that are irrelevant here.
Having had both a 25 Pronghorn and 6.5SAUM, I feel the WSM case is a more efficient case and has longer throat life.
At the end of the day, it's your choice what cartridge you use.

Cheers.

If you stick with a standard Uber short throat of a 28 nosler, then you may be right on, but if your gonna keep a standard throat there really is no reason to build a custom rifle, unless you only plan on shooting factory ammo, but that is a different discussion. I think being properly throated goes a long ways at increasing potential.

giving a bit more throat does have some speed upside but it's way less than most people think and or should be thinking. Generally (IMO) if one is adding length to a throat to get more speed then they're really working it hard to get it. Pretty much the same old thing as going AI.

I'm 63, I've been loading for centerfire for 51 years. My one and only one item on my wish list for us loaders is that some day we have available to us pressure measuring systems that are trust worthy and cost effective (IE sub 1K dollars).

I expect that when the day comes that we have pressure testing equipement at our disposal we'll all be learning some lessons. Kind of like back pre LRF everyone would routinely make 400 yard shots, then when good LRF's become common place people were routinely making 255 yard pokes...:)

I'd say build it, and let primer pocket life and speed be your guide.

But, please don't build a 7/08.............sorry couldn't resist.

have a great day all!

(last Q, Cody were you able to sort out anything with the goat tag you had or was it just a goat rope?)
