6mm cartridge selection

Planning a new build around a standard b.f. short action I acquired, cut for wyatts boxes giving a max COAL of 2.995". I rather like my 6 Creed heavy chassis target setup, but I'm looking to put something together that's much better suited to hunting. Looking for advice on cartridge selection. I'm shooting the 103 ELD-Xs right now, and would love thoughts on the optimal case to use given the magazine length restrictions. Stick with the Creed seeing as I'm set up for it already or if there a round out there that would net measurable improvements at that length? Thanks!

Depends on what you're hunting. But if you are going to go with a 6mm then I cannot see why you wouldn't stick with the CM. I'd just make sure to keep the brass separated for each rifle if you reload.

Seems the AI is exactly what I'm looking for...except that pesky fireforming bit. 6x284 would be ideal, but that seems to like a COAL more like 3.1" Might just have to stick with the Creed and dial an extra click or 2 for more distant critters.

with a little work your fire forming loads will be plenty accurate to hunt with, I never start load development on any chambering until the brass has been fired two times so it was never an issue for me

That's exactly why I would do a .243 AI
That's my next build and I love the creedmore. Just after doing. This so long I find it easier to go that way.

An idea I've had for some time, set a 6mm creed chamber to a tight fit on a 260/243 go gauge. Turn high end 260 brass to 0.014", Neck down to 243 just enough to close bolt with some resistance and then fireform. It'd be essentially a 30° improved that you could still use your creed dies for. The 260 parent case will have close to enough neck length to fill up the creed without leaving a big void for carbon accumulation. I recently acquired a ruger American 6cm. Gonna shoot it for a while and see how I like the case, I already shoot 22,25 and 6.5cm so I'm sure the 6 will work well. It just seemed about the perfect 300y and in spotlight/truck gun with thr 22" threaded barrel for my supressor. Freebore is MUCH shorter than saami so I need to throat it a bit to get all the factory ammo off jam.

Nothing wrong with either a standard 243 win or 243 AI. But the OP already has a 6mm CM so I'd just keep it simple for him or her.

The bummer thing to me is that the 6 creed is splitting hairs with the .243. The AI version of the .243 is enticing but its little gain for the trouble. The KISS option is stick with what you have dies for. My 6 Dasher kills deer just as well as the .243 with far less recoil if you wanted to go to the really short cases. With standard cases, the Creed, .243, .243 AI seem to be the main options. I think all of those are in the same boat. Of course you could go really fast with the 6 SST but you would need a mag bolt face for that.

The Creed is super conservative by design to make sure virtually any bullet fits in any magazine. It was designed with sales in mind, performance second, and clearly it's worked lol. For my specific application something like a 6-284 40* -.100" would be the cat's hind end but I'm not quite crazy enough yet go to that level of wheel-reinvention for maybe 50 fps over current options 😂
