I need to get out and finish tuning some 116 hammers for my brothers browning medallion and I got to thinking about the cartridge. I mean, has anybody owned one that doesn't shoot ridiculously good? And do they have any purpose other than being a death ray? There's probably some 270 weatherby guys that wonder the same thing. This is the 3rd one I've been around that really doesn't care what it spits out. I kind of have the same feelings about the 25-06 and the 257 weatherby but every once in a while I'll hear someone getting a lemon and maybe someone has or had a 270 wsm that wasn't a death ray. I don't know why I brought it up. Lots of cartridges that are better in other aspects but for just simply killing things, I don't know.

Well seeing as the 6.8 western is essentially the same case but a hair shorter on base to datum and is saami'd for faster twist, I would think the 6.8western would do just as well!

Ya. I loaded up some for my buddy and his 270wsm, savage rifle,
I will add that the 116 absolute hammer has turned 1.5 moa rifles into under 0.75 moa rifles for my family.

Five 270 win all shooting lights out.

270 wsm is a killer
ya, I loaded some up for my buddy and his savage 270wsm and both him and his boy both used the rifle to kill some pretty nice bucks. Both died instantly and most importantly the hammers limited the damage on the one the boy shot running away

I have owned 3 270 wsm from 3 different mfg.All three shot great and it was usually bang flop kills.I don't know why I sold them but now I need another one!!!
Ya, maybe because it's not the most popular, they don't mass produce and end up with a better product? I really don't know but something that I got to thinking about

Maybe so. I think the western is designed for the longer bullets that might give it a little more versatility but lots of competition in that department. The 270wsm is like a dirty secret

There's a few guys in the forum who shoot.270 Ackley Improved who really like them. Sort of. .270 WSM on steroids, a seriously overlooked cartridge, that's very accurate with great performance. Just doesn't seem to have gotten any publicity. And…..if you really want a real 6.8, build a .270 WSM, with a 26 inch 1in8 twist barrel and then check the performance. The 6.8 Western in my opinion is marketing hype to sell rifles!!! The .270 WSM already shoots flat, has more powder capacity then the 6.8 Western, and with the 1-8 twist it ought to sling those heavier pills with a bit more horsepower

What's your absolute hammer load? Working one up for a buddy this summer
Be aware, these loads are hotter than I would normally but are only for hunting so work your way up. Was running 3430-40 out of the savage and 3360-80 out of the shorter barrel browning

I think all of the WSM based calibers shoot great. I've loaded for all of them with great results. Personally now building 2 for myself in 300WSM and 7mm WSM. I will eventually build a 270WSM also to complete the brotherhood in the safe.
Ya, I think there's a ton of really good choices nowadays. My brother has a lot of very good rifles in different calibers and of course the one he wanted to go kill something with was the 270wsm I hadn't got around to finishing. My buddy on the east side is about to take his grandson out and cull a 2 point so that will be 3 with the 116's
