6.5-284 build questions

Hey everyone,

I'm building a 6.5-284 on a Defiance long action and planning to shoot the 156 Bergers. My question for all of you is about bottom metal. I'm planning on running the Hawkins BDL and I'm assuming in a long action I'll have more than enough room to seat these out a ways, correct? I'm also wondering what spring an follower should I get. Regular or Magnum?

Might want to call them. I had a discussion with them awhile back about installing a Baney box on a short action and they were helpful in talking to me about their BM.

With a long action mag box, you will be fine with standard LA length. No need for an extended LA box.

As far as standard or mag, the .284 case is slightly fatter than the 06 based cases, but not near as fat as a magnum (RM or WM diameter). I suggest standard feed lips and staggered follower.

The COAL of the 156gr EOL Berger will be approximately 3.1-3.2" when loaded 0-.050" off the lands with a spec 6.5x284N, throated at .188". A standard long action/follower loads and feeds fine in my LA BDL formats. My156 loads typically run less then 1/10th of an inch in COAL longer then my typical 140-143gr loads.

Built one off an old Remington 700 BDL 30 06 about 10 years ago , changed barrel to Broghten and today it will shoot the 156's, 1 1/2'' group @ 400yds

Yep.
The .284 is one of those "short action" cartridges that really benefits from a mid or long action when using heavies.
Tikkas are ideal for them, as are Mauser actions.

Yup...my standard 3006 LA 700 has lots of room in front of my 142lrabs...i believe 5/8" to front of box from bullet tip......

My last question is what Wyatt's box to get for this? I emailed Wyatt's and they told me the RLA box, but I can't find much info on that one. Anyone have an idea on the box I need....just a standard LA box, correct?

Standard LA is perfect. The 6.5-284 and 6.5-06 are very similar in COAL due to the 284 pushing the bullet out of the case further. Great cartridge.

Here's a question that came up....I was told that I can't use a magnum bolt face and I need a standard .308 bolt. Is that correct? When I look at defiance actions I don't see an option other than magnum and Lapua bolt faces. How then do I get a standard long action with a non-magnum bolt face?

When you order the action, you specify what length and bolt face. This is the Anti-X.
