RAMSHOT LRT POWDER

In my humble opinion, unburned powder may have come from a way over compressed load, or maybe not using a magnum primer, or both with a powder that is very slow burning to begin with......this was not because of a temperature difference between 101 and 87 degrees.

Maybe if you said 30 below, I'd more believe it. But, free powder may have been going out the barrel at 101 too, just the wind wasnt blowing it back into you that time.

I will do a quick calc in QL to see what percent of over fill that load was in 264 Mag. case out of curiousity.
Well it seems that your load as you say is not that over compressed. I'm getting between 99-102% of case capacity for 264 Win Mag at 80 gr LRT depending on what brass you are using. But, it must be that this is such a slow burner at .285 burn rate for LRT that
in a compressed load, if you are not using a mag primer, and maybe if you are not seating your bullet very deep that it will not burn all the powder. I would seat the bullet at a depth that is still safe but gives it a little more burn time and use a mag primer, and then if you still get blow back of unburned powder, I guess that's just the way it is. But I don't believe its temperature related.

There are only a few powders that burn slower than LRT. US 869 0.2735, RL-33 at .267 and N570 at 0.277

I've heard people using 869 say its like shooting tar its so slow. So, if you have compressed loads, regular primers, long coal's with
bullets seated fairly shallow, and a really slow burning powder, I suppose you are gonna get some blowback of unburned powder
possibly. Either that or its minute traces of carbon from your rifle barrel? Do you clean it often?

Just some thoughts of things to consider as you ponder this.
 
I'm really looking forward to trying this powder with the 225 eldm in the 300 norma. I also jave a 21" 338 lapua that I'm gonna test it in as well. I have a lapua improved but I already have a load for it with the RL33 but I may give it a try one of these days
 
Even if it was the same burn rate, what is the density/volume per cc or comparison?
I believe you are asking about the volume measure density chart we all use for powder measuring? average volume of 1 gr of powder

I notice most of the ball powders Accurate and Ramshot make like RS Magnum and Accurate Magpro that are just slightly faster than RS LRT have VMD's of .0661, .0663 -average volume of 1 gr of powder.

I would expect LRT to be not far from those. I have not seen any published VMD for that powder yet? Maybe someone else has.
But, I'm guessing it has to be about .0667 or .0668 range.


Retumbo in contrast has a VMD of .0721. H-1000 is .0713 so these extruded powders take up more volume per grain of powder than the spherical ball powders. Makes sense. So, I think that implies you can pack the spherical ball powders more densley than the extruded powders as well into the case.

For 300 Win, 230 Berger OTM, @ 3.6" COAL, I fit about 10 grains more powder in the case (LRT vs H1000). I guess right around 10% more.

My fingers and brain wasn't functioning on the same wave, but yes on how you stated the reply. Some reason I measure 1 cc of powder and then check weight. This way I know max charge of 100% fill ( not max pressure). I fill the case to the mouth then subtract the volume the bullet takes up inside the case. Works better on QL for me. That is until I can better operate the system (saves, changes and data corrections).
 
Tagging in. Just picked up 5lbs of LRT. I'm thinking about a laser beam load for a 7RUM. 150 - 160 grain projectiles.
Thoughts?
 
My loads with it in the 300 prc we're pretty close to the published data that western powders has. I wouldn't hesitate to use it if I run out of n570

What do you like about N570 vs LRT that you'd stay with N570? Slightly more velocity?
