7mm PRC Wildcat Build

I've got one, running 195s 2990fps from a 22" barrel with N570 from adg brass. Very impressed with the cartridge. Dallas Lane specd the reamer so it's got some tweaks similar to the Wheeler specs to eliminate pressure signs. I'm going to be doing a 338 version as well.
Yeah I did a custom reamer as well with custom freebore to match the bullet - turned out great with pressure signs only showing up with case being about 95% full or more

I can't believe Hornady hadn't done this yet, to be honest. Been waiting... Good on you for taking matters into your own hands ☺️

I honestly believe there is a niche to be filled in the market for that size 7mm. Sure, I know there is the 7 rem mag, 7 wsm, etc. But I think a non-belted 7mm at those speeds would do well. Especially with a lot of marketing hype like Hornady is so good at.
Wouldn't that be the existing 7mm WSM?

Wouldn't that already exist in the 7mm WSM??

Not much of a niche with the already mentioned ones but also the the top end 7RUM and 28 Nosler 7mm LRM 7mm Dakota
Not knocking the 7mm-300PRC as I think it's a great round and very versatile but as many other calibers out there we have a lot that can be used to cover anything we want pretty much a different round for every hundred yards from 100-1000
Heck there's even the blaser mag too
And likely a bunch more I didn't mention

IMO there no niche to be filled. Not picking a fight with anyone just saying we have a lot of overlap. I'm all for anyone building what they want and for good reason because you can and want it. I love it but to say it fills a niche I can't agree with.

I'd argue that the top end is full already with little room for performance improvement.

Personally, I'd love (and will someday have) a 28 Nosler. However, it's waaaay more horsepower than I need or want for most of my hunting, and it torches barrels so I wouldn't even shoot it all that much.

Something like a 7mm PRC would be easier recoil, easier on powder and barrels, just more fun to use more often.

Just my thoughts ☺️

Yeah, sort of. A lot of the time people run them in long actions though anyway to get top ballistic performance (speed). I think there's room for a long action cartridge in this caliber without a belt.

That being said, yes... We do currently have cartridges that basically fill that ballistic performance section. But, you know gun people, we are always looking for the next best thing. I don't think it'd be a hard sell with a company like Hornady promoting it.

Kind of similar to the 300 PRC. Really no ballistic difference from a 300 WM, but it seems to be doing well.

How is it different than the 7 LRM then?
Main diff is PRC case is a little bit longer (LRM = 2.514 and PRC = 2.580) so PRC case cap is larger so more speed. Other than that not a ton; as mentioned, one of the reasons I made it out of PRC is that so many companies make PRC stuff. Brass, components etc....makes it easy to get stuff without having to go through one outlet like Gunwerks or Sherman

That makes sense, I genuinely didn't know. Is it longer from head to shoulder, or neck length? Thank you.

Have been working with wildcats, or non-standard SAAMI rifles for quite a few years. Truly enjoy the process and discovering new and interesting ballistics profiles for hunting. I primarily build them to feed my theory. Big heavy bullet, going as fast and accurate as I can to ensure in hunting conditions, even marginal shots kill cleanly.
For this project I wanted to make it simpler. Take known components that are easier to find, and currently offered reloading tools and processes, that make a fast 7mm for western hunting. I did a 7mm-300 PRC
For this rifle I really only changed one aspect of what is already a pretty good case. All I did was neck it to 7mm. Thats it. No rocket science, no math, just a smaller bushing in the 300 PRC Redding die. In this configuration:
  • BAT Action
  • 24" PROOF bbl in 7.5 twist
  • AG Stock
  • Timney Elite Trigger
  • Kahles K624 scope
  • ADG Brass
  • 175 gr ELDX bullet
  • RL 25 powder
I am seeing 3172 fps at a 2/3rd up the ladder node which produces sub 1/2 MOA. Can go faster and started to see pressure signs at 3229 - but 3172 seems fast enough LOL

Anyone else doing something along these lines?
Who made your reamer and did you chamber yourself?
Thanks
Len
