So I need to get some tack for horses, as I am newly starting horseback hunting with my father in law. I want some saddle bags that I could fit in a small seek outside tent, spotter, tripod, some food and sleeping bag/pad. In addition, I need a scabbard for my rifle as well. So what is some of the stuff you use?

Thanks guys!

I would rather have a place to put my stuff on my horse, that way if I get an elk down, I can put the entire elk on the pack horse, and also so I can go back in with just one horse, and not be forced to always have a second horse.

I don't recommend a scabbard. My buddy that I go elk hunting with has seen a loose horse running with a rifle in the scabbard. If you get bucked off, you at least can hunt.

Trailmax makes a great scabbard. For saddlebags, go to Amazon and read customer reviews. Part of it depends on how much you want to spend...

I see this as being a long term investment, I usually try to get nicer gear, mystery ranch pack, seek outside tent, Sitka coat, etc., and my wife's rifle is a full custom built on a Defiance, krieger, manners, etc., and my rifle is similar just on a rem action, so I want to make sure I have them protected well. More of the buy once cry once type. I am looking at the trailmax stuff, they really look pretty good....

I ran a trail max scabboard for years and still have, just as gun case or tie on my Rokon.Had Morgan bags and small double saddle horn bag liked for small stuff, gloves binocs, candy bar. Some guy on here think he was Idaho built nice scabboard, the long guns and big scope might have to go custom.Back in day ran my 340 wby so I like to carry butt to rear under right side,my buddy liked butt up at horn. A straight leather one eats the rifle,my wby 7mm almost no blueing from scabboard where, scratched up pretty good too.

This is what I use

I truly feel that you are going to have a trial and error application. As Sp6 stated, everyone has a carry preference, some horses just don't want to cooperate. I specifically built a rifle and scope combo that could be pulled from scabbard quickly. Some scabbards are so dang tight when cinched it's tough to remove the rifle if you have an angle that's not perfect.

Yeah agree. No one wants to see a horse running through the bush armed. Keep the rifle off the horse on yourself so if you get bucked off, you have the rifle readily available to shoot that **** horse!!! Must one tag a horse??? :) :) :)
