Hello all. I was wondering if anyone has a favorite video on how to quarter an elk? I've worked with deer before so understand the basics, but was thinking there might be some good tips and tricks that could he helpful given the size difference and typical packing distance.

I would recommend looking up the "gutless method". If you have to break down an animal for packout, it is a great way to go IMO. There are many videos on it on youtube. If you have worked on deer, you will at least understand the anatomy and how to separate the joints. Elk are much bigger, but pretty much the same anatomy.

I would watch a few of them, as some show different tips and different camera angles to give you a good idea on what you are getting into.

Thats wat I use on elk and moose....

another gutless method user for a number of years.
Here's a youtube ... there are many others.

Randy Newberg - Gutless field dressing elk

just don't forget the tenderloins! Once you're all done, they're easily reached from the back cavity.
Very good and detailed video. Not sure a solo hunt for an elk is a great idea, at least for me. Looks like two people are needed to handle something of that size.

Last bull I killed was a solo hunt. I killed him 3 miles from the truck. I called my wife to tell her I was packing out 1 hind quarter, expected to make another round trip for the second hind quarter before calling it a night and finishing the next day. That quarter tripled in weight before I made it back to the truck and made me call it a day. I called for re-enforcements and got my youngest son to bring a game cart the next day and spend a day in the woods playing mule with me.
Fortunately, we had a pretty easy trail to roll the cart on.

Hey! Ya gotta go with what works. That cart saved the day!!

I watch all of Randy's videos, I hunted solo elk last year and didn't have a single problem doing the gutless method the way randy does it.

The hardest part was bagging the quarters, but on the last one I realized if I just hang the quarter in a tree first, I can just slip a game bag right up over it. Easy peasy!
