308 win still worth having

My 308 in a Ruger #1, it's wearing a redfield widefield in this pic, now has a zeiss 1.5x6 diavari mounted on top.
Favourite load is 130 grn barnes tsx over cfe 223, gives around 3150 fps and around moa, most accurate load is a 165 grn spbt speer over N-150 mv around 2800 fps, better than moa.
I use the barnes where the landowners demand copper bullets, the speers where they don't.
I try to limit my shots to what I think is 250 - 300 yards, invariably it's nowhere near that.

I call my 30-06 "308 Magnum"
One LRH member claimed a little over 2900 fps using I believe a 208 ELDM and RL26 in his 26" 30-06. We need more people going out there with heavy 200's to see what they can get! I was going to save my 208 ELDM and RL 26 but I might load some up to get 30-06 22" barrel data out there for this year's hunters.

It took me a while too be a 308win fan/believer let alone a 30cal want too have! Out of a RR 26" with lapua 185 loc-base/fmj-bt and MV being about 2,750 and ME at 3,106 you can't go wrong! For what you take and seldom give from a 308win with 180-195gr bullets, it's a very efficient cartridge!

I thought the popcorn idea might take off.
The point of my devils advocate question is that if the creeds are so good seems like LE and the military would be all over them. As far as I know they don't use them, so the 308, and 223/556 must still be pretty good!
I get wanting to play with different stuff like the creeds and wildcats, been there done that, but in my older age, I am coming back to the simple. proven stuff and enjoying it.

The military's is not known for choosing equipment based on what's the "best"

6.5's have been filtering into SOCOM units for the past 5-6 years now Nothing happens quickly in the military. Lot Of logistics involved . Im Sure it'll be an ongoing process. I can tell you that the guys that are getting them are glad to be getting them and guys have been pushing for an alternative LR caliber to the 308 for a long time. There's a reason for that.

For shame!!!!! Just kidding. I love the 308 win but it has it's limits. The 6.5 has a flatter trajectory and various cartridges based off that bullet has been proven.

I do too! Love the 308.. everyone should have atleast 1. And itll make you a better shooter too. Managing recoil, and It's a lot less forgiving than the 6.5's where wind is concerned so you better have it right

It's a great caliber, but there are better options when you're looking for a 1k capable non-magnum rifle.

For 25 years all I hunted with was a 308 Win. Now days my pair of 308s sit in the back corner of the safe next to my 30-06. The 308s were replaced by a 30-378 which I still use sparingly. Now days I have many options in different calibers I own that I hunt with what feels good for the day.
