Actually you can in a couple of Alaskan units. Sitting over a salmon stream might look the same to the alien observer. Cruising shore lines in a luxury yacht causes it's share of haters to comment.
Lots of variation in bear hunting, bear density playing a role. Also local temperament.
Bait stations here you won't see as many bear, as what is spot and stalk in BC. Not unusual to see 7-8 bear a day just driving roads. Glassing the clover on the road banks or the cut blocks.
Similar happens with antelope, and mule deer with many guides, scouting using trail cameras etc. OOPS forgot it has to be DIY or it don't count.
Not offended, if I'd quit every method of hunting somebody felt was beneath them my life would be a much emptier place.
My least favorite thing being "hunters cheap shots" at other hunting groups. Especially on a hunting site. I left out LRH above "its not hunting it's shooting".
We've lost entire seasons, methods of hunting, and implemented absurd technical regulations while we quibble, but hey by all means let's keep it up, it's working so well.

I am not a HATER so lets get that straight. Hunting Browns from a jon boat and seeing them on shore eating fish is one thing, but sitting on a yacht drinking a good bourbon and then by chance see a brown and shoot it-its shooting not hunting. What I mentioned about hunting Blacks over bait was just my "OPINION". Anyone can hunt the way they want. I just think the it's "Shooting" not not "HUNTING" when someone baits an animal all season and knows the time when the animal comes to eat then have a "SHOOTER" just kill the animal when it shows up. Really don't think - again my OPINION that is what most hunters want out of doing all the prep, travel and the excitement of the HUNT. Then just shoot an animal like it is in a ZOO.
YES I know we use trail cameras, pattern the animals, scout all season, so how is that different???? well I guess you can decide if you spent a whole season tracking, spotting, looking for beds, scrapes, patterns, well if you spent months doing all these things to harvest your animal-I would say that you are hunting. I would spend all spring and summer into the fall scouting an area out to get a nice buck. Yes using maps, GPS, Trail Cams.
If you just show up the day before-pick out your animal (deer/bear) off a bulletin board and then show up the next day at the time prescribed when the animal comes to eat-you are just a shooter. I have seen some people that I have hunted with spend $8K for a trip to Middle Canada for trophy Bucks They showed me the videos of the guides putting out corn/hay in front of the stands. Then they videoed a dozen bucks walk within 50yrds of the blind and shot one they picked off of the board. Then the group came home with all their pictures of the TAME trophy bucks they shot for a small fortune.
I look at this site "LHR" Long Rang Hunting and read some of the most interesting stories of true hunts. Shooting an animal in a bait station 50yrds in front of you is not LRH. I think that the majority of us on this site are hunters and truly hunt for the excitement and skill that we have developed over the years to actually take game.
If you want to hunt over bait on programed animals my hat off to you if that is the way you hunt. Some of us can hunt and some of us can shoot. Just an OPINION!

I did post my nice S&W Model 29 on post #5 that I carry when hunting. 44 mag 6" and had it Magna Ported.
Happy Hunting and Post #576 had some nice handguns that would be effective for BEAR. Really like those!!!!!!!!!!!

If it's legal, it's hunting, period. You don't have to like something to realize it's still a legal and ethical form of hunting. How about using a worm to catch fish ? Not really all that fair is it ? Maybe we should slip on fins and a scuba mask and chase them around the lake in hopes of catching dinner. Way more challenging right ? There's more of a middle ground really and it's the legal means of hunting. Whether it's using bait, hounds or spot and stalk, all great ways to hunt bears. BtW...Most states don't allow the use of alcohol while hunting or using a weapon. When you drink alcohol and hunt at the same time, it becomes a violation. That part is outside the legal means to hunt.

Try collecting bait all winter,unwrapping it all.Bag it back up in compactor bags so it can be packed in on packframe.Drive and ship it all way up to AK.Clear trails,set up the two bait sites your allowed.Set tree stands,clear shooting lanes for bow.Daily pack 45 lbs to sites.Hope a bear finds your site in time to hunt.Had one not hit in 21 days,which is long time and all I had.Mornings a spent running all over to bait,much travel by boat,dealing with tides.No one around but the bears.DYI,had several friends get skunked.Not so easy as sounds.Now the weather 100 '' rain,makes it more fun.

In many ranches in Texas we do harvesting...shoot ofver bait Every year I take a deer for meat over bait. If you saw other posts, I said I harvest. I hunted in Colorado and South Africa.
