Anchorage LR

Not aware of any in the Anchorage vicinity.

You may have to find a lication on public land to set up for 800-1000yd shots, and then keep it to yourself like a good hunting location.
That's what I've done in the past, south of Anchorage, on the Kenai Peninsula. We do have a 700yd range now near Kenai, AK. But I don't use it...

No worries, I'll try and give you a south central rundown.

1. the range in Anchorage is Rabbit creek, it's run by the state fish and game department and maxes at 100 yards. Has pistol, rifle, and really nice sporting clays.
2. Birchwood shooting club is about 40 minutes north of anchorage, has 100, 200 and 300 yard rifle ranges. 3 pistol ranges, trap and skeet. Members only and it's about $350/year.
3. Farther north by Sutton is a true 1000 yard range. It's a small outfit and only open during the summer, Mark Taylor from Wiggys Alaska and snipershide teaches long range courses at that range and I have heard it's awesome.
4. Down south you've got a range in Cooper Landing that I think goes out beyond 100 yards, but that's about a 90 minute drive from Anchorage.
5. Kenai has the snowshoe gun club that I have heard is nice and goes beyond 500. One of my good friends has a membership there and it's pretty affordable.

Target shooting on public land is frowned upon in the state regs but compliance is….minimal.

Could you provide the regulatory citation regarding shooting on public land? I'd like to read that...

Man I can't really find anything concrete now that I look on the ADFG website.
It does say on the state parks website from ADNR you can hunt but target shooting and even "sighting in" is prohibited. It's in their little FAQ though and not a real regulation. good news is BLM website says they allow recreational shooting…as long as you're not in the Kenai special use areas. Like most land use issues in the state, seems like you should be extra sure exactly whose land you're on and what they allow as it could change by agency who administers it.

Thanks for the followup.
I do know that target shooting on the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge is prohibited.
I don't know of any comprehensive restrictions on Kenai Peninsula Borough owned lands, or State or Federal owned land at large.

But there are some specific prohibitions in State Parks, Federal Wildlife Refuges, Municipalities, and other special land management areas.

I had to find a location here on the Kenai Peninsula on Borough owned lands, and then kept my mouth shut. Because an overabundance of shooting within hearing distance of any residences will commonly lead to complaints and some hassle, even if it's legal.

Thanks for the info. Looks like some effort for longer range recreational shooting, but I'll be bringing a brand new ant along, so won't have a ton of time for that anyway. Guess I better dust off my shotgun for rabbit creek though- that looks really nice.

Farthest is 300 yards in the anchorage area (Birchwood) which is a private club. All the others (rabbit creek, maud road) are 100 yards. One near talkeetna, mile 92 of the parks hwy has a 1000 yard range but it's about a 1 1/2 -2 hour drive from anchorage. The range in soldotna or Kenai is supposed to be nice with steel at all ranges out to either 600 or 1000 but I haven't been there.

Making a move north, and google isn't revealing any ranges with much distance. Anything in the area I'm missing?
there is a outstanding range club on the parks hwy just past sheep creek lodge restaurant about 4 miles past on the right Frank Galli has classes there for long range hunters and shooters they hold matches there also will get you a link.

Is the Isaac Walton range still operational in Chugiak? They only went to 300 yards, but I have been in WY since 1995. Just curious.
