Sig released their newest RF, the Kilo 5k, to the market this morning. It is apparently the first in a new line of RF's they will be bringing to market. It has a lot of impressive features pulled from their current lineup including onboard environmentals, continued BDX and Kestrel/Foretrex connectivity, stronger ranging than previous Sig CRF's, onboard ABU. All in all, they appear to have pulled a lot of the best capabilities from their RF's, while increasing ranging somewhat (how much, I am not sure, but it looks like a pretty good upgrade vis a vis their other CRF's)....but for me, the most exciting is the new GPS integration with Basemap.

Basically, you can range a position, and it will transfer that data and drop a pin in Basemap for navigation. I find this particularly interesting after having a very hard time finding my bull last year. I shot it across a canyon and he was down and done but to get there required a very circuitous route that was hours long. By the time we got there, it was waaaay after full dark, near 10 pm IIRC, and though we had taken readings, pictures, set pins to the shooting position etc., we still had a very difficult time finding it in the dark moonless night. Ultimately, we did, but really started to worry it was not going to happen and it would be bear or coyote food by the time we found it in the morning....this would have made it much more sure and much faster.

O course, it will also be useful for navigation, planning stalks, etc., so I can't wait to try it out and see how it does, but in theory, this is a real differentiator in the market for Sig, Swaro's version not withstanding, as it is much more limited AFAIK.

So I am pretty excited to check this new tech out from Sig. I don't know when I will have one to actually try, but I am also testing a Sierra 6 right now, so I hope to have something from the new line to work with through season and see how they fare.

The First in the Revolutionary New KILO K Series of Rangefinders

The new KILO5K 7X25 mm laser rangefinder monocular features the new XR technology (Extended Range) giving it a maximum reflective range of 5,000 yards. The KILO5K includes Applied Ballistics Ultralite onboard along with environmental sensors and supports BDX External for connecting to external devices such as Kestrel and Garmin devices. Additionally, it works with BaseMap to provide remote waypoints on ranged targets and can be fully configured with the SIG SAUER BDX App.

I just read some of the specs on Sig's webstie and it appears that it will only give a firing solution out to 800 yards. That seems like a step backwards from the Kilo 2400 that will give a solution out to anything it can range. I'm not sure what the point of being able to range something farther is if the onboard ballistics computer isn't going to give you a solution for it. If they can change that part of it I definitely would be looking at getting one.

Surprised nobody has come up with a direct competitor for the Gunwerks G7 yet. Are there patent issues that are impeding this?

The Sig Kilo has certainly filled every hole that the G7 had. I own both and the Kilo is superior. Just another dude's opinion.

now i know why cabelas has the 2400 discounted, still a good deal at $1k. I have the 2400abs, but the new nav feature is pretty cool. i just wish the phone jack wind meter worked on my phone but can handle another way.

Very interesting. The fact that it works with BaseMap to provide remote waypoints on ranged targets is military concept, and IMO is brilliant. I'm an OnX user and if a Kilo can place waypoints in it, I may need to upgrade.

I can't use the BDX to scope feature, but I do like the other features. Colorado banned "smart scopes" so Sig BDX, Burris Eliminator, and Tracking Point are all on the list.

I use a short dongle plug from my phone to the wind meter

Nothing is perfect for sure but what I love about my G7 is that I don't need any other device to use it and make long range shots. I don't want something that I need to pull my phone out for as well. To me it's kinda like which vaccine to get. I like the one and done method.

The discontinued Kilo 2400 is awesome. Gives a solution to what ever distance you can get it to range. If Sig could have just added the newer features and left the Abs ballistics solver as it was this would be a big winner. I'm not sure I'm going to want to shell out money and go backwards from the ballistics solver the Kilo 2400 has though.

There are two new models coming out a kilo5k BDX and a kilo8kABS the 5k is to replace the 2400bdx which was not the same as the 2400abs. The 5k comes with ABS light and will provide ranging solutions to its max range when paired with a ABS Kestrel just like the current Kilo3000 the 5k has a price around $600. The 8k has the full ABS software that will provide ballistic solutions as far as you can range like the 2400ABS but it's price is where the 2400 ABS was at $1500
