6-284 or 6 Creed

Been reading LRH posts for a couple of years but this just my first post so forgive me if I don't get it right. My gunsmith is starting a re-build for me this week and I can build pretty much whatever I want. I am replacing the barrel and rebuilding my first rifle that I owned - a 244 REM 700 ADL SA custom that I had loads of fun LRH with killing ground hogs, varmits, deer and winning bets long before there were range finders. It's completely shot out so time to re-barrel / rebuild. I love speed and plan to use the rifle for long range steel and varmit hunting. I was thinking of building a 6-284 but I don't see very many people talking about the cartridge and wondering why. 6 Creed might be a good choice too and wondering what you guys think. Thanks

First off, both are great options. There are pros and cons to each one and I plan to build either one of these in the future. I also bounce around on which one I'm going to go with. Here's my opinion on it staring with the 6mm Creedmoor.

With the Creedmoor you can use your factory magazine box to fit and feed your ammunition. Brass, ammunition, dies, reamers, etc are all readily available and not extra expensive or hard to find.

On the 6mm-284 you will have to neck down brass, most likely neck turn, have to have custom dies, and it will burn more powder. However, it's a super cool cartridge and should run 150-200fps faster than the Creedmoor. It won't feed out of the box magazine unless you're running lighter weight bullets in the 75-85gr range.

6mm-284 is going to be overbore to hell and gone. Just how often do you want to rebarrel? First, ask the question what are you doing with the gun? Varmits? Sure, a light bullet at high speed. How about .224? .244 is kind of a middle ground. Not perfect., but not sad. Something larger than varmints? Why not a larger bullet? Plethora of 6.5 bullets out there these days. How about a 6.5 Creed? I would not mess with .244 or .257 these days. Either go small for light recoil, or go larger if you care to shoot stuff that needs it. 6mm Creedmore is intriguing, I admit. But probably no better than .243 Win. And you can get that in quality brass easy.

Nobody has just one gun anymore I guess. Why settle..... Have one for each use. Or two!!!

My vote is for the 6-284 if you are up for the challenge. 6 Creedmoor if you want ultra easy. I've got a 6mm-PRC finished but I haven't got around to loading or shooting any rounds.

You do know the 6mm rem and 244 rem is the same cartridge just renamed because of twist rate ? Why not a fast twist 6 mm rem?

6-284- some more velocity, maybe not that much more probably need 26" to really outshine the little Creedmoor. Will require Magazine work to feed probably a watts. Good brass but gonna need to work it, depending on your reamer probably have to turn necks(pita)
If you jump through all those hoops you'll add 75-100 yards of big game lethality way past fun shooting range but you'll have a "wildcat"

The 6 XC is, a BETTER version of, the 6 Creed !
With a slightly shorter Body ( so that, the LONG 108 to 115 grain Bullets, will Feed out of, a Short, Rem 700 action ).
Has a Longer Neck to "move" the Bullets "out" to "touch" the Rifling.
Better Barrel "Life" as, the Powders Flash, AKA, "Turbulence Point" is DEEPER in the case with, Estimated "Life" @ 2,500 Rds !
I did a lot of research and chose, the 6 XC !
Shoot's "Bugholes" with, 80 grain HP Varmint, Bergers to, the 108 gr. Elite Hunter's in a 24" 1-7.5 Twist. !

Im for anything on the 284 parent case just finished a 25- 284 , but Fergus said he all ready had the 244 rem a Barrell swap too 6 mm rem with a faster twist than his 1-12 everything stays the same

 

[Creedmoor shooter]

I own a 6 creed and love it. It's super forgiving and is just a hoot to shoot. 6-284 is a pretty interesting round. It will definitely be faster than a 6 creed, but the 6 creed will be more efficient being less over bore. My 6 creed shoots a 109 berger at 3100 fps with only 40.5 grains of h4350. Barrel life will definitely be significantly less with the 6-284. The 6 creed has quality brass available and will feed from a SA magazine. You'll have to single feed the 6-284. It just depends what your wanting to do with it. If you just want to load and shoot, 6 creed. If you want to be alittle different and don't mind the hassle of the 6-284 then get that with the knowledge that it will be a barrel burner. Even more so than the 6 creed already is.

Simple, just go look in the mirror, if you have a man bun then go with the Creed. If not, go with the 6-284.

Sure- except the case is inferior and there ain't tons of good 6mm rem brass rolling around. No factory ammo et el. It's would essentially be a wildcat based on an outdated cartridge
