Badlands Precision Bullets thread - From BC to terminal ballistics

Thank you, this is great to here about the 270 badlands because that's what I have planned on using when my 338 AM when it's done.
This will be one dead serious combo when she's up and running with the 275 BD-2's. Please come back and tell us about it. You'll need a redwood tree behind anything you hit with that to keep it from drilling a leak to China.

Attached is what we like to see for high speed and low speed expansion. We try to keep the petals on if at all possible. This keeps the frontal diameter bigger, and transfers more energy, and causes more damage. This is a little bit less so in the Super Bulldozer line, as the ogives are longer, and thinner, and the bullet is geared toward lower velocity impacts. We still try to keep the petals if we can, but some sacrifices had to be made to get low velocity performance. Now, had you fired these for a 2800fps impact, I would guess all petals would have blown off in spectacular fashion causing a huge channel and incredible energy dump. Unfortunately after that initial dump, the wound channel created by the smooth cylinder of the base is generally small. But any bullet can only take so much abuse. The bullets I've pictured are smaller, easier to contain calibers, fired into 10% gel. And are fairly representative of bullets we've recovered from game animals where there wasn't a major bone impact. Unfortunately this is a pretty rare occurrence, as they don't usually stop, and are not recovered.

As far as getting ahold of Badlands, you have my attention. Shoot me a message, and I'll see what we can do.

So am I understanding correctly that the intention is for the SB II bullets to retain most of their weight and hold the expanded petals while losing the tip, similar to a Barnes bullet? That would explain the very shallow HP cavity I saw in the recovered bullets. I wasn't sure if that was a result of the low impact velocities, a less than ideal barrel twist, or just the result of a very limited sample size. I need to stop wasting time and reach out to Badlands to see if I can order up a bunch of small quantity "sample size" packs of different bullets to test. I've been saying I was going to do that for nearly 2 months now and just haven't followed through.

Very helpful info. Any experience with the 70 gr BD-2 in a 7 twist 22 Creedmoor? I'd like an idea of expected velocity before I order them.

That's great information, thanks. Those pictures are very close to what I saw.

82.7gr N570 with the .308 196.5gr BD in a 30-8x68S Improved. Case capacity is identical to the 30SM.
CCI250 primers with bullets seated 0.035" off the lands.
MV ~3,140 fps from a 26" barrel.

What freebore does your chamber have? I have 0.215" in my Nosler and thinking I may be below the neck line.

My chamber has 0.265" freebore.

That's pretty what I thought it would take to seat the bullet perfect. Thank you sir

Has anyone done much testing with the 205 30cal sbd2? I was considering using it my 300 Norma Improved but I am concerned with the lr expansion.
