Caliber for Pronghorn....

I've used my .270 and now my .280AI. My wife shoots her 7-08 and it does great also. My longest shot was 385 yds with the AI, most all of them drop in their tracks.

Well, I ended up taking the 6XC, 6.5 Creedmoor AR10, and 300 RUM to the range.....the 6.5 had the scope taken off for another project....the pics below are of my thumb and the two shots i fired from the 300 RUM @550 yards..the silhouette pic shows the two shots in the heart area...the 6XC AND 6.5 Creed AR10 shot good, after I adjusted for the distance......The hunts this Tuesday, 24th-26 of August. Went scouting this morning, saw 5 shootable bucks, one a DEFINITE shooter. I'm going to take the 6XC with 115gr and the RUM....I know it's too much gun...but with the confidence I have in it, if I need a 500+ yd shot, it will be my go to...meat damage hopefully will be minimal with a heart/lung shot.....will post back on how things go...Thanks for the input, almost robbed a scope for the 6.5-284, but will have to wait to another hunt to use it.....rsbhunter

Whatever you decide, don't shoot them in the shoulders. Shot mine last year with a 300wm and 180 trophy bonded, no meat loss. The hole on the opposite side was something else!

I've always used a 6mm in the past. 1st one 53 years ago. If I ever draw a tag again I try my 6.5/06
I used a 7mm mag fast and flat he was watching us at about 600 put the crosshairs down the center of his face and across the base of his horns thought it would hit em in the neck but it hit me in the corner of his left eye dropped like a bag of dirt but wasn't worth mounting after that

As I've said many times the .257 Wby Mag is perhaps the best choice that I know of for that caliber, trying to tip over turbo goats, with that said; if I had to pick the absolute fastest, flattest, and hardest hitting at longer ranges in the small-diameter caliber I'd go with the 6.5-300 Wby Mag hands down. Just my 0.02 Cheers

Pardon my ignorance, but how big does a Pronghorn get? It seems like the hunting ranges are usually long?

The largest might get close to 140# on the hoof from what I've been told. About 40 pounds of boned out meat seems to be the norm for a decent buck. Does somewhere around 35 pounds or so.
