300 win mag powder

Your rifle will be different from everyone else's but my 26" Krieger 300 WM shoots the IMR 4350 under .500" with 180 grain Accubond at 3000 FPS. I know it's not the same bullets, but it's in the same weight class. Nosler says 70 grain max. FWIW, I settled on the 180 grains and 79.3 H1000 at 3100 fps using Winchester brass. With Peterson 300 WM Long, 1/2 grain less. I have had good luck with IMR 4350. When I started loading in the early eighties, it was one of the best powders available along with R19 and R22. My how things have change. When powders are hard to come by, it only makes since to adapt and overcome with whatever safe powders you have or can get. The 300WM is not particularly finicky and that is why it's my favorite cartridge and has been for 30+ years. Chasing speed is great and most of us do, but in reality, if you know your gun and your load, I don't think most game animals will know the difference between 2900 and 3200 FPS 🤔😉.

I find that Barnes bullets are pretty easy to find accurate loads for, they just like a lot of "jump". I have two 300 Win mags and both shoot 180 ttsx bullets with H4831. I tried 175 lrx bullets but couldn't get them to shoot as well. Also like 168 ttsx with H4831 for mule deer.

I would start with the IMR 4831. Seat them deep and give them a good jump. I ran my 175 LRX at 3.335" COAL in a stock Ruger M77 so they would feed from the mag.

Reloader 22 got them moving for me. The 4831 may not move them as fast. I think the 4350 would be my last resort. Save if for the 152 class Hammers when you get frustrated with the Barnes.

It's a conflicted point that you make, with all do respect you can't seat them deep and give a good jump to the lands, at the same time. If it is seated to deep you will encounter problems with pressure, get a Hornady OAL guage and that will help you with the best length for your gun.

Seat them deep into the case...thus creating a large jump to the lands.

I did not say seat them long...thus creating a jam into the lands.

I hate jumping bullets a long ways off the lands to start I don't care what bullet it is if it don't shoot which direction do you go. Every barrel bullet combo is different. If your mag box will allow it start .010 off and work back .010 at a time that takes the guess work out of it.

300win i try and use H1000 first then if it doesn't give me what I want i start looking at everything else. This is a group I just shot 190smk moly with H1000. 3050fps. 20210617_114028.jpg

From Google Translate (fabarm): "Hi, I too would have some advice to ask about the.300 WM but with a 1/12" line-up step. I have Mrp Standard and 204; Vihtavuori N160; IMR 4350. I'd like to load for the hunt with 150, 155, 165 shells. or 167 grains. With what jump from the lines should I start and at what intervals should I approach or move away from the lines. Thank you to everyone who can help me. Sorry if there are any errors but I'm using google translate."

My interpretation of 'lines' in this context is that he/she is referring to grooves / rifling.. i.e. 1 in 12 twist rate. So, the question seems to be 'how far away from the lands, and in what increment should I move as I test?'

Historically, I'm used to seeing recommendations to start at least 0.020 from the lands and move away in increments of (depends on how many shots you want to spend on testing). Say.. 0.005 to 0.010 each step?

And, of course, powder recommendations for 150-165gr bullets.

Start your jump .020 off lands and go in increments of .020 to .080, ogive off lands. Take your best group and fine tune from there. I only use 175 and 200 grain bullets in a 1-10 twist 300 WM so can not help you on powder. You should do your powder test with different powders and ladder test your charge weights for best group before you do your jump to the rifling. I take it you live some where other then North America so I would test powders that are available to you . Nothing the matter with Vihtavuori powders...
