Can you guess what caused this failure?

Witnessed this failure a couple of years ago. The shooter had minor bruises to his face and slight concussion, eye protection save his vision .
We verified no squib load or obvious barrel blockage.
Rifle was a 300WSM. Factory loads. He had fired 2 rounds, second round caused the failure. He was verifying his zero for a hunting trip.

Look closely at the barrel rifling. Zoom in on the barrel rifling. Notice the shiny color.
If you guessed copper, your right. Over pressure was due to copper build up.

Was amazed to see he wasn't seriously hurt.
This can be a danger hobby and we need to pay attention to all details concerning our safety.

How many rounds do you have to put through a barrel to have enough copper buildup to cause overpressure? Thousands with out cleaning? Look at rifles used in combat and how many rounds are fired without cleaning?

The only copper that would cause that is if there was a bullet already in the bore.

Nope buddy they shot and kept shooting till the there was a warm glow from the middle of the barrel,,tilt downward,,liquid copper filings pour out,,,good to go ,,START OVER.....LOL

I concur, that, I don't believe that was the problem

He might of had cooper buildup, but that was a defective barrel.

According to Norma not as many as you may think.

The FOS giveaway in that 'Norma' report is the last sentence shown: "The barrel was essentially impossible to clean but this did not matter because we had already ruined it". So basically, they had a precondition leading into this, but made a broad implication out of it.

I wouldn't trust anything from that writer..

My opinion again.
It would take somewhere around 150 to 230gr of "copper fouling" in the barrel to cause this.
