New Zealand Hunting

I have had NZ on my bucket list for a hunt for many years. would like to know from anyone that has hunted NZ for some of their experiences. Would like to do a trip their in the future. I already have free air travel, all the hunting gear, just need a place to hunt.

Thanks
Len & Jill

Hi Len and Jill,

At this stage hunting in NZ may have to stay on your bucket list. Our boarders are basically closed to travelers other than some of the Australian States. If you could get here you would have to go into a MIQ (Managed Isolation and Quarantine) center for two weeks at a cost of NZ $5520 for the first adult and NZ $2990 for the second adult.

You would also need to apply to NZ Customs for a temporary import permit for your rifles and to the NZ Police for a temporary Firearms Licence. Please be aware that all center-fire semi automatics are now banned as are all magazines holding more than 10 rounds.

Now for the good news! We have seven species of deer here including Fallow, Sika, Whitetail, Rusa, Red, Sambar and Wapiti. On top of that we also have wild pigs, goats, Chamois and Tahr.

Depending on what species you want to hunt there are many guides available to help make your trip a success. Ngamatea Station is a great place to hunt Sika deer and supply guides and huts to stay in for example.

Non Residents are allowed to hunt our Public Land administered by the Department of Conservation (DoC) without a guide but you must have a Hunting Permit which can be applied for online at the DoC website https://huntingpermits.doc.govt.nz/huntingpermits/start

Thanks much! That's a nice Red Deer! Looking at 2022 or 2023. Hopefully all this crazy covid stuff will be over. Before we would come over we would need some really reputable references for the cost associated for NZ hunts. We could most likely go back to South Africa and shoot 5-7 Plains Game animals there for the cost of one in NZ. We really would like yo go to NZ just for the adventure!

Thanks
Len & Jill

I am scheduled for April. PM me and I'll give you the details. Did a lot of research and found a great deal. Probably could get a discount going together

ednied1:

I tried to PM you as well... I'm planning a NZ DIY "cast and blast" in early April 2021. Thinking about West coast of South island, looking for hunting, fishing and beaches. Any suggestions at all would be greatly appreciated.

PM out to kiwikid as well.

Shane.

I've hunted there and had another hunt scheduled for the roar in 2020. They shutdown 2 weeks before our hunt due to covid. Everything got pushed back April. This year but due to borders still being closed we are now pushed back til next april 2022.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me l would be happy to help in any way l can.

Unfortunately that's the only picture l have of the stag l got on that hunt. Lost my phone which had my pics from NZ.

Aloha

Nice stag. Jill is freaking out on the picture. Thanks for any help in advance. Will contact you shortly.
I lived on Oahu for 9 years. One block off of Waikiki Beach and then on Koko Island. Spent most times on the North Shore Sky diving, surfing or on the west coast scuba or back side of Diamond Head night fishing off of the cliffs for Ulua with Tako for bait. Da Kine Ladat!

Aloha

Hunted with Gary Herbert in NZ in 2016 and had another trip planned for 2020 but covid prevented. Now, with hope, we will be able to hunt again late July with GH as planning. Will not be traveling with firearm and using outfitters rifle as discussed. Will not know until 2022 if possible. Who knows? MTG

Let's all keep in touch - would like a hunt in 2022 or most likely 2023

PS - you forgot the humble rabbit and hare. In season - ducks (requires license) and pest species - parries, etc. Native birds are protected. Also feral animals - stoat, ferret, cat, cattle, dogs, maggies, etc.

Yep, we will have to see how it all pans out for next year. Hopefully it all works out as planned and we are able to go. I hunted with Brent Moody of Mountain Hunters New Zealand and will be returning there as well for this hunt with a group of friends. Can't wait we were so bummed our 2020 hunt got canceled last minute. One good thing that happened though due to the hunt being pushed back is a dear friend is able to go with us. So we are very grateful for that!
