What caliber

Hmm! I hunted with the 270 Winchester for many years and harvested many mule deer, whitetail deer, antelope and even elk and bear. I loaded 130 grain cup and core spire point Bullets to 3100fps back then. I found that in hunting one does not always get the perfect standing broadside shot on that once in a lifetime trophy. My best mule deer buck in 1984 only offered a quick moving shot. After a long tracking ordeal in the mountains I was able to put 3 more Bullets in him and he finally dropped. Some animals are tougher than others and take more. The cup and core bullets shed weight, petals and jacket which limits deep penetration and lethal damage. I switched to a 300 magnum with 180 grain Bullets for more energy and penetration. I then switched to the all copper Bullets when they first came out to get better weight retention. I even went down to 150 grain all copper Bullets at 3200fps with great results. I have harvested deer, elk, bear, kudu, gemsbok, wildebeest and Dall Sheep with the 300 magnum and all copper bullets. I have had much better penetration and instant drop on the spot harvests with the larger diameter heavier 30 cal all copper Bullets. In a 30 cal magnum you can always shoot lighter all copper bullets in medium game and go up in bullet weight for larger game.

Hey bud. I can vouch for the 6.5/284. I love that cartridge and have taken a lot of game with it. Like it better than my 270 WSM. They shoot so comfortably and are easy to tune - very accurate and capable. Running the 124 HH's in ours for deer with remarkable results. I wouldn't be scared of that load for elk - within reasonable distances of course.
I might even have a little-used one for sale. ;) My boys are getting older and buying their own rigs, and I'm thinking to open up my safe a bit. Have too many. You're welcome to PM me if you want info.
Someone has one on here for sale. A savage with X-Caliber 6.5x284 barrel in a Mcmillan stock for $950

stick with 270 win if you want a faster twist get a new barrel for deer hunting 150 gr will kill anything out there. Deer are easy to kill you dont need custom bullets I use win power points even at 50 yards your good goes in about the size of a 25 cent piece comes out the size of a base ball knocks them sideways and they don't get up.

Just to sum it up for the non-believers of the 284 parent case.

I have lots of calibers in my safes and like and use all of them from time to time. They are all good in their respective place. Yes, some cartridges basically cover the same game getter abilities and others are at the far end of the game spectrum.

The ability to just buy over the counter ammo for the 284 and its derivatives is the negative side to using one.

On the other hand... They are the hand-loaders dream calibers with the advent of long sleek projectiles seated farther out to achieve better ballistic dynamics.

284 Winchester, 6.5x284 and 6x284 have all been used extensively in competition with substantial records to prove and in the field with great success in medium to big game long range hunting.

Powder requirements are less than almost all competitors in their velocity for caliber and case size... meaning its one of the most efficient cartridge cases.

Brass is becoming easier to find as Lapua makes brass for the 6.5x284 and now 284 Win which tells me there is renewed interest in the parent case and is perhaps making a comeback.

One more thing... although these are not super fast, max velo magnum cartridges... they will absolutely hold their own
in long range killing power with their accuracy on shot placement ...and, not blow out bullets as bad in short range work.

Try one! You'll Love it!

If you love a 300 wsm like I do, I paired up with a 6.5 wsm. You can shoot high BC bullets really fast and out of a short action. I get it the 6.5 PRC is really similar but still loooove the 6.5 WSM. Probably going to build another one on an ultra light platform.

I love the Sherman stuff but it gets very expensive to get into. If a guy has a 300 wsm bushing die already. Quality 270 wsm brass and a bushing and bullets gets you into a 6.5 wsm pretty easy. With that said , I wish I would have jumped into Sherman's a long time ago , especially now with the mega . #goals.

I have a .270 wsm and it loves just about any ammo i put in it, it runs a 150g accubond at 3100fps recoil is mild and is a pleasure to shoot, extremely accurate. If you tweek the twist rate, you may even be able to run some of the new high bc bullets that they are making for the 6.8 western. Just sayin!

That's what I been thanking of or a 270 win with 1/8 twist. I'm not sure why but I've got a itch for the ol 270 win again
