That would be fun. The OP is looking for minimal recoil, so we were counseling together about some lighter loads instead of heavier that will keep him in comfort zone but still high on performance. That's where the Hammers come in. (wink, wink)

Yeah I suggested early on 30-125 BT's in the 308 win. but he's looking for a elk round too. Reduced recoil in either will work until his son gets used to it.

Agreed... I too suggested the 30-125 BT's in 308 for whitetail. ..But, I wouldn't bring that for elk.
Low recoil for youth and whitetail... we covered that over and over again. Elk...Well, you have to get him shooting heavier bullets or wait till he can... Or as others have said (not me), the great coppers should do it.
Don't bring a badminton racquet to to a tennis match!!

Yes I agree I wouldn't use that for elk either. But I have seen some people that have taken big bulls with far less gun than I would want to try.

I know I can.
I'm sure many others as well as yourself who offer great advise on this site can! We also don't want someone who is recoil shy to wound and lose an animal because he or she pursued one of the biggest game animals with the wrong equipment!
I won't take the chance of a lifetime bull with a light weight bullet and I don't think anyone should...(unless, of course they are truly handicapped)!

We started with low recoiling 308 loads vs 7mm-08 loads for a youth hunting whitetail but when we transition to elk... whole different story... unless of course, he can put the bullet exactly where he wants...WHICH seems unlikely that someone looking for a low recoiling round can actually do that.

This is just me, but I personally wouldn't hesitate a bit to hunt elk with the 125 NBT out of the 308 or the 120 NBT out of the 7/08. Point it in the right direction and said volunteer will go to Croak City Wyo really fast!

And or if you want a tougher bullet go 130 TTSX or 120 TTSX...

Is there something in between a 7-08 and .308? My son wants bigger, but the .308 has too much kick.

7.62x39 in a Howa or Ruger is great out to around 250 yards. Especially if you reload. I like Barnes bullets.

I just went through this with my son. I got the 124 hammer hunters and loaded it up with IMR 8208 xbr. Ended up running about 3075 fps out of a 16" barrel. He is very recoil shy and he didn't mind it at all.

284 Win has more kick then a 308 Win

Stick with the GREAT 7-08 Rem with the right Bullet !

All of the in under 7 lb rifles I like the 7-08 the BEST ! to shoot ! jmo
