Thought you guys might get a kick outta this. So, I'm outside today pruning low-hanging branches from a Bradford Pear Tree and I look over to my left and this fella/gal (corn snake/rat snake) is attempting to crawl past me like I wasn't even there. I grabbed a branch to chase it off and the dang thing actually crawled right up under my house.....behind the siding right below my 7 year old daughters window. Well, that just wasn't gonna do.........so I waited.....and waited....and waited.....and finally it crawled out and I managed to pin it down with a forked stick. I took it next door to neighbors barn and turned it loose inside there........after a quick photo shoot. He/she and I both will be more 'comfortable' with that new living arrangement 😇. It was actually pretty docile the entire time.

When I had horses years ago in upstate NY, had black rat racers that were 6-7' long! My wife refused to go into barn at night which was their hunting time! Never had a mouse issue in barn! Way better than cats! Plus kept people out too once they saw them! Never bothered horses at all.

I bribe my neighbors 3 cats with little cat treats to hunt my property. They completely eliminated rodents in my yard. But, normally we have gopher snakes, but those are rare as home builders have flattened the desert around me.
I tried the 'cat thing' once....for rodent depredation purposes. Went to the animal shelter and adopted a young one to be an outdoor cat. It disappeared after 3 or 4 days so I went to look for it and managed to find some it's fur about a hundred yards or so from the house. If I had to guess I'd say our local coyote population had a field day with it. 😕

Oops! I asked my neighbor if the cats had claws, and they do. For climbing trees to get away from coyotes, hunting for sure. Also spayed and neutered so they don't leave home looking for love.
I was thinking of getting a six pack of them at the adoption site. Some will disappear as yours did. We have so many abandoned animals in this city, they could be put to work, just being an outdoor cat, doing what they do. Coyotes have dropped since construction picked up. But, they'll still be here, in lower numbers.
