Hunting With Sierra Match King

Why do you complain about a 33/3378 blowing up a deer at close range. WOW!!!!
Where did i complain? I said the bullet was too weak for the cartridge/animal. The S MBT in the 338/378 is a target bullet only. Unless you are ok with blowing up smaller animals. With the correct bullet it will be fine.

It will work fine. I have used 3 different SMK bullets on hogs and they work fine. More meat damage and not instant drop/kills (unless head shots) but its 2021 you gotta do what you gotta do...

By all means gsteve I apologize and didn't want this to sound negative. I was making lite of your post where you said the SMK with your 338/378 almost blowing up a deer at close range. The power and velocity with that cartridge and then using a match round "SMK" probably is a "terrible" at a close range, but did the job. I know some shooters that use SMKs in a 308 for deer with very good results.. \. I should have used more and different wording.

I shot this 300# hog probably 10-12 years ago with my 6.5x47 and a 142 SMK. About 300 yards out quartering away. I torched one off and got her right in front of her front shoulder. Dropped dead on the spot. I was actually surprised cuz that bullet did not do a lot of damage. Small entry would small exit wound. .

They're not ideal but you put the bullet in the right place while it still had some energy behind it and it'll do the job. Not all animals are created equal tho. I wouldn't hesitate to use that round on deer, hogs and medium to small game. Deer, antelope IMO aren't really tough animals, ie not real hard to kill. So yeah i would think those SMK's would be fine for that

elk and larger game would be a different story I think.

I'll play devil's advocate also on this question though. My research indicates the Army uses the 175gr SMK in their standard 7.62 sniper round, so one could easily argue that the bullet has proven to be lethal. The designation of the round is M118LR.

1. people are easier to kill than a 1000lb animal

2. you don't Care if gut shot bad guy suffers and.runs off and dies 2 days later and you can't find him.

3. Ita takes 1 thing to take a person out of the fight!, and something completely different to take an animal down as quickly and painlessly as possible and ensure that that meat doesnt spoil and go to waste.

I have used the 142 on antelope. Shot mine at 860, and the bullet did not expand, as one would expect from a 142 smk at that distance. Most consistent bullet I have ever used, but not the greatest in regards to expansion, and clean kills. The antelope did die, but it did go 100+ yards before it did, "both lungs being pierced".Not a big deal in antelope country, but a different story in whitetail country. I would imagine annealing the first 1/8-3/16 of the tips would help in the expansion department.

Curious as to what the starting velocity was and what the impact speed would of been @860?

Long and the short, if you said I had to use SMK's the rest of my life I'd load them up and not sweat it one bit!

Between deer/lopes and elk I've seen first hand or used the following, I do not recall ever shooting more than once. Critters generally pretty much bounced at the shot. Lung shots for the most part. On one nice mature bull my buddy shot him @ 110 yards. Intentionally hit both fronts. The bullet went completely thru and the chest cavity was goo..........said volunteer bounced at the report!

One of the elk I took in Wyo was @ 550 yards. I used the 150 SMK out of my Mashburn. At the shot down it went! Also took another bull in Montana at just shy of 500. Again, pretty much boom whack and down it went.

The bullets we've used are as follows and like I said I've not seen anything to scare me off as of yet:

22/250 and Swift=52
6/06=105 or 107
25/06=100
270=135
7 Mash=150
300 Wby=168
340 Wby=250

Might of been some more, just can't recall off hand.

I used to use 168 30's in my 308 normas. Killed a lot of deer, wouldn't attempt to take an elk with it. Too many other options. I've switched over to Barnes TSX or TTSX a few years back with good results. I've seen quite a few barnes offerings on the shelves for the past 3-4 months. I might try some hammers this fall.

The SMK's would usually have jacket separation and would find the jacket under far side side skin.

I plan on using a 77gr. TMK out of an AR for whitetail this fall.

There are many options, some seem to work better than they should, while others "designed" as hunting bullets aren't spectacular.

Many don't get to shoot much, so accumulate data slowly. Judging a bullet by how it worked once, is a test sample of 1.
If those bullets is what I had I'd use them. I'd probably open the tip up a bit, and shoot for 🫁.

I use the Federal Premium 165gr Sierra Game King's factory loads in my 30-06. 1" groups at 100 yards and great results on deer and hogs. Most deer drop, the ones that ran left good blood trails.

@dogz have you used the 150 scenar L in your Mashburn yet or do you still use the 150 NBT? interested in results with the scenar.
Thx

PS sorry for the hijack….

Kimber-that I recall I haven't bounced anything with that bullet besides some chucks at fairly long range for which they're totally adequate:)

I have zero doubt as to the outcome of the 150 Scenar on elk. They shoot like a house a fire in the Mash!

Still mainly using the 150 NBT as I've seen no reason to change not that I haven't deviated from it a bit here and there. Last fall I bounced a really nice bull via the Mash. I had 169 LRAB's in the pocket and Scenars when it happened fast the bullet I grabbed was the LRAB. It worked...:)

Hope all's well my friend

(bounce me a text and I'll send you a pic of the bull)
