belted magnum FL dies

do all belted mag dies have a ring or lip inside the base of the die? If so, is that a limit to headspace?

None of mine have a recess inside the die for the belt. RCBS & Redding both, in .264WM, 7RM, .300WM, .338WM The die body just sizes down to the top of the belt.

No clue. But, yet, it limits headspace ability. Same as any die though.

What are your issues you are having that is bringing up the question or concern?

I checked HS with a Hornady head and shoulders HS gauge and the shoulder only got set back .003 even when the die is touching or slightly cammed over.

.002" is perfect. That is what I strive for all the time, in any cartridge. Belted on not.

You can always shave off the top of the shell holder just a touch. See if that gets you an additional .001".

every rcbs belted magnum die I own has the recess in the die for the belt 7mm 338.300 win,264.375 and 300H&H if it did not have that recess your die would not be able to contact the shell holder

I have no trouble chambering, just concerned of head stretching. I am guessing that RCBS set up this die to just contact the shell holder or a little more.

Ok just got off the phone with RCBS.... the shoulder is set back .003 thou, and I remember from a fired case .003 die touching the shell holder. I told the tech maybe I was doing something wrong. But now that I think about it, the HS could have been too much by the shoulder... even though the case belt stopping at the base shoulder.

Headspace is held to minimum tolerances to avoid changing the case body length during full length sizing.

You cannot change the headspace on the belt, it is adjacent to the solid part of the case head.
All belted dies I own have the recess for the belt. RCBS, Redding, Forster and Lyman.
The recess is not designed to touch the belt, but is there to allow the case to enter far enough that the expansion line is sized and the shoulder bumped.
The .003" you're getting with a slight cam over is good, I would back it off to .002" and set it and forget it.
