There is another thread on what caliber for a brown bear but let's say you have settled on a .375 H&H in a bolt action.

Now my question is which model/ brand / Mfg? Ruger, Winchester, Weatherby, and how do you spec. It out? Stainless, composite stock, barrel length?

scope? 1x4 or a newer 1x6 or 1x8?

thanks, I am just bored right now.

You have good ideas as for rifles and I would be sure to choose a 1X4 scope with tip-off scope mounts with quick iron sights. I have hunted bears in thick cover and can tell you first hand what I prefer.

I knew a guide, Wally Rochester, when I lived in Alaska that lost a brother while his brother was guiding a bear hunt and I don't think he had open sights option. His client gut shot a bear and refused to go after it with Rochester. The bear killed Rochester, sadly. If I recall properly, by law, the client was supposed to go after the crippled
bear also.

Due to losing his brother, Wally was considering getting out of the business.

I'd go with the Ruger, more likely these days .375 Ruger cartridge than H&H, and I've used, respected, and enjoyed my H&H for 40 years.

In a similarly purposed build I'm putting a Leupold Mark 4 2.5-8x36 on it. At 16 oz its still a solid option in that class. If unavailable the Nightforce 2.5-10x compact is only about 4 oz heavier, and certainly a contender, maybe better.

Some attention may be needed toward reticle choice as well. Try not to get too busy, and maintain a good visible reticle. Illuminated helps my older eyes.

The other thread has been a good read.
My first option if going with a factory 375 H&H. Sako 85 Kodak or Brown bear.
Second Win m70
Third Ruger Alaskan or African
Wood or Syn is up to you
Stainless and composite make sense if your in wet or humid conditions often but to me a walnut and blueing look much better

Scope, I like the Swarovski Z8 .75-6x20 or Z8 1-8x24. Not saying it's the best option but the one I have the most experience with. NX8 1-8x24 seems like another good option to. There are a lot of good LPVO to choose from.

I was looking at that one, and was concerned in FFP at low power the crosshair might be hard to find. I've had other FFP scopes, and that's my only concern.

I need to spend more time reviewing reticle possibilities, subtension parameters or better look through one.

I have FFP scopes and I agree not what I would want for close range hunting. But mine are higher Mag ffp. I'm not sure how a ffp lpvo is though never looked through one.

NF does have 1-8x24 ATACR thats SFP

**** client.
He shouldn't hunt bear if he isn't willing to followup.
I haven't hunted DG but it fascinates me. I would like to Hunt bear.
Don't take the shot if you won't follow up. Firstly it's about ethical hunting , don't shoot at anything if you can't follow through if you stuff it up.
I'm not brave but if I'm brave enough to tackle any DG you gotta be committed to see it through.

I missed that one Thanks! I'll look again, could fit what I'm doing yet. These discussions are helpful, each manufactures has so many lines, retail has such limited selection to handle. Especially when it comes to reticle availability. Leupold is good about changing those. I've never asked any one else about sending one in for change.
I have a 1-4 Leupold European, and have used the 1.5-5 Leupold a lot. I like 30mm better, and an increase on top end is desirable. With either of those scopes you can see front sight on the rifle.
The Nightforce would be a rugged effective option.

Bears do funny things to us, even small black bear, It's why we hunt them.
We baited for a few guys, and initial experiences were fun to watch.
Most of our bear were shot just at dark, in thick cover, very close, and disappear quickly. Lots expect bears to never move after shooting them with powerful rifles, much less how fast they do. It doesn't fit the video in their head. A few minutes re thinking is needed.
Some had never followed any wounded animal, and didn't, in spite of talking about it before hand really grasp what it meant. Confusion as much as fear, looking for more guidance than back up. More than once I met someone at the pick up, and the bear went one direction they went another.
We've set baits in some pretty spooky places, bears, or not, hunters just left. Some apparently never having been alone in the dark woods before.
A bigger, potentially more dangerous bear no doubt is going to raise goose bumps its why we go. You're correct though, especially if someone else is going to have to carry that load, finding a way to up your game is part of why you came, or should be.
If you're going to lead such a track assessing who's behind you with a loaded rifle becomes necessary. It may be better to have them unload and deal with only what's in front of you, bear bites are preferable to magnum rifle holes. A clear plan of roles first is necessary with the best of companions. Making a terrified, panicky man unload his rifle in such a situation is another interesting learning experience as well.

Yeah on that! One of my sons lives in AZ and has done some guiding. After having to guide a few slobs, he gave it up.

I would not be hunting with someone I could not trust with a loaded gun behind me.
Guides have little control over who shows up.
What appears to be a solid safe companion in town, can change with stress in the field. Head on a swivel and situational awareness are your friends, as predicting human behavior is past experience, and getting those past experiences can open the unexpected.

This boils down to what you are willing and able to spend.
