Hunting with E-bikes

If it provides assisted access, then yes. Why should someone have preferential treatment if access is not by foot? A horse is no different. It is a mode of transportation. Horses damage the land just like any other form of transportation. Its not hard to understand a horse is a form of transportation. Why shouldn't a horse be regulated?

Perhaps reading the Wilderness Act from 1964 would be a good start. 406muley

Nope, well aware if it. I disagree, horses provide unfair advantage to ONLY those who own horses are ENTITLED to remote access. You want to hang your hat in a 57 year old act that is out of date with current needs? Land Management plans are not etched in stone or else they will fail miserably. The environment alone changes whether from natural or external influences. Society changes, political changes, heck climate changes MANDATE the review of policy to reflect these changes. You need to understand I am not advocating unfettered access but FAIR and controlled access which is not the case right now.

I don't have an E-bike and can't afford one. It's not fair. mtmuley

The Bob Marshal hasnt changed, its remote wilderness,no roads. And almost no human could shoot and get a elk out from the center of it.Expecially if two feet of snow on the ground. Its hard country, horse country.

First, I want to thank @406muley for a really good civil polite discussion that in a lot of forums would end in diatribe. We can disagree and still present our thoughts for each other to consider. I bet we can have a really good beer talk!

So is a horse fair? They are expensive, require unique requirements most cannot meet. I cannot afford an Ebike either but what I see is a disparity of access that needs to be addressed.

I really don't know what is the right mix for access. We are at a point where accessibility is going to become a PITA that has to be addressed to be fair for all.

Whose mtmukey? But I agree. My fear is we are going to love our wild places to death. Lots of change coming, I just hope it can be done without harm to what we have. 406muley

The only way to remove all disparities, is, in addition to allowing Ebikes to go anywhere into the wilderness, the gov't must also give everyone an Ebike. Otherwise people who don't work couldn't get an Ebike for riding into the wilderness, and that wouldn't be fair. And, those free Ebikes have to be good ones so that really fat people can ride into the wilderness, too. It wouldn't be fair if you eat McDonalds and candy and watch TV all day every day that you couldn't ride into the widerness, either. And, those Ebikes need to have air conditioning, too. It wouldn't be fair that people who don't like the heat would be uncomfortable on their wilderness rides. And, . . .

😁

Because those of us that may be against the onslaught of users of these machines want to know. mtmuley
Like the same way you asked me if I was born in Montana? Let that sink in for a moment. It does not take a rocket scientist where you are coming from. I already told you where I stand, and no further explanation or justification is required, esp. to you. Like it or not, deal with it.

BTW, thanks to FWP, I already have a couple of places to use my e-bike.

Fascinating thread! I actually read through the whole thing, and I see some rational thought or reasoning behind almost every post...but just for today! At the moment e-bikes are very similar to a conventional bike in many ways, and have a similar impact. My concern is not about today, but tomorrow and beyond. Anyone who thinks that e-bike technology and capability won't take the same path as the electric golf cart to a Tesla, has to be ignoring the obvious. "They aren't a motorcycle..." kinda true today, but not tomorrow. Unless some real enforceable limit is established that keeps their capability in line with conventional pedal bikes - they really are the next motorcycle, and the regulations we set now need to reflect that. A 69 Corvette did a quarter in 14.2 at 98 mph a Tesla does it in 9.8 at 155 mph. It's not about electrifying a bike it's about advancements in technology and how we want the spaces we recreate in to look and feel for us and our children. I still want places I can go and not be run over (or run by) whatever the next conveyance is.
The department of interior has limited the power output. I'm sure it exists, but I haven't seen where they are allowed over 750watts in any of the areas I have read about.
