Can't be sure because I don't load the caliber - but bushing ODs are standardized to fit in all compatible dies (neck type bushing dies). Maybe someone else can chime in. It should work.....

I'm not near my load bench but my logic is If you can possibly measure the shoulder that the bushing sets down on inside the die and the 30 cal case neck can pass thru it... then the 284 die should work with proper the 30 cal. neck bushings.

I may have missed it but have you tried just necking up the new brass and loading it? If new bass won't chamber or your sized brass only has .001 headspace there is a chamber problem. I'm just going to assume your smith didn't test fire the rifle. That barrel doesn't look like it had much if any lapping done after rifling it. Throat is pretty rough to, I've got a 25-06 that looks about like that and coppers up nearly the whole length in 5 shots. Think I'm going to order some Tubbs lapping bullets and see if it helps. You wouldn't think you would have an issue with a donut seeing you are necking the case up and not pushing the shoulder back.
Perhaps but the improvement is not. I have, and .30-06 and .30 Gibbs, and I assure you the .30 Gibbs is not your typical venerable .30-06.

I agree! Another example is Rich Sherman's improved cartridges.
... and before that are ICLs. I actually considered the .30-06 ICL Caribou, but I was fascinated with the Gibbs and the reamer and dies and already available. All of these .06 variants are impressive and fun project builds.

Hmm, so if you run a regular 06' at the dame unsafe pressures Gibbs did to get his claimed velocities, wonder what it would do ?

Some cartridges gain more than others. All gain one very important attribute - which is why I personally went the AI route in several cartridges years ago. Case growth goes to almost nothing with the steep shoulder angle. I hate having to trim brass and monitor growth. I almost never have to trim my Ackleys.

Well, I am currently propelling 190 Berger at 2806 FPS out of 24" using RL-17 with more room to spare. PO's claim is old, and he (and Gibbs) did not have the same powders available today.
Agreed! And sometimes, the gain is not necessarily all in the velocity.
True. I like that I'll likely get the same performance as an '06 with less recoil, longer brass life, and extra magazine length!
Finally got my rifle back a week or so ago. He polished the inside of the chamber again and throated it longer to seat my 180gr bullet right on the lands as shown. The base of it is right around the shoulder/neck junction. The throating reamer he used is wayyy smoother than the 30-284 reamer he originally used. Unfortunately it didn't remove all of the chatter mark looking ridges, only about half.
Since my laminate stock is cracked right behind the screw holes, I widened the barrel channel in my factory stock to accept the new barrel and used it. I didn't have good expectations of it though because I'd replaced the recoil lug awhile back and I thought it didn't seem to seat quite right.
After a 3 shots of break-in, I got tired of cleaning and just shot. I shot 6 of one load and 1 each of 4 other loads before calling it on that stock. The accuracy of the first load was very poor and poi shift from load to load was pretty wild. So I put the laminate stock back on and continued.
I ended up with four 3 shot groups of different loads with the laminate stock, and accuracy was very poor. The best group was around 1" at 100. I used the remaining bit of some accurate powder I had this time rather than. The imr4451.
Load:
Aa4350 start at 53.0gr, increase by 0.4gr
Cci200
180gr interlock
Peterson 1x annealed
0.015" off lands
The groups last time prior to having him lengthen the throat were much much better. I'm not sure if the accuracy was so bad just because of my laminate stock (maybe it's become less stable) or just due to the powder/load change.
Another thing to point out is that I had sold my original rcbs dies and bought some Redding FL 30-284 dies Graf's had in stock. The combination of that, annealing my brass, and polishing my chamber I think has made it at least functional. but, I'm pretty sure I've only got maybe 0.001 clearance in some portions of the chamber. I measured some of my fired brass from today and it measures the same that the fired brass did prior to him polishing it. I first size some cases with my Redding dies without annealing and got the same exact dimensions I got with the rcbs dies. I only was able to size the case down by 0.001 more after annealing them. I'm sure this all sounds rambling and doesn't make sense. Anyway, I'm pretty sure my chamber is still very tight but at least I don't have a hard time chambering or extracting the cases.
I bought a used Tikka walnut stock from a fella on here, so after I get it I'll load up some other powder and see how it does.
Overall, that was not a great experience, but at least I can chamber rounds easily and seat a 180gr bullet out to a reasonable length.
