Reloading for the average hunter

I would advocate staying afraid of going past max in the newer rounds that actually publish real max. My 6.5 CM was maxed out, leaking or blowing primers more than a grain below max. Published COAL helps but even still that 62k-63k psi wall is pretty firm. Older cartridges in newer guns? stuff em good.

Had a 300 WM blow primers with charges 2.0gr below max set at the recommended OAL. I found in that rifle starting charges were shooting about 150 fps faster than the book estimated them at. I never take shortcuts now. I start at the minimum charge and work up.

I have done this for a buddy of mine, we both use the same loads. Nosler 50gr BT, Rem or Win brass, Fed 210 primer and 36g of Varget. Both of our COAL are well above factory @ 2.500", but work well shorter too.
This node appears to spread from 35.5-36.5g.

The California Rifle and Pistol ***. is fighting a good fight. I have been a life member since sometime in the 1980's or so. They finally got the Mag law removed. The 9th Appeals Court has been a big problem. Trump got some of that straighten out. We needed 4 more years of Trump to have completed that. A lot of people talk, but don't vote. Even when I was in the fields of Vietnam I voted twice. In 52 years of voting I missed 2 times. Both time I was out of state hunting. I feel about it very strongly. Like joining the NRA, and supporting it.

If all else fails get a Nosler loading manual and load there accuraccy load with one of their bullets other wise your really shooting in the dark!!

Liability is always a concern. Your buddy may not be of any concern, but if he died in the explosion, he's relatives may be very concerned about your liability.

None of the loads mentioned are max loads and the OP has already stated that HIS reloads worked in the other guys rifle.
I have seen blown primers and locked up bolts from FACTORY loads...but they don't get a mention as to being unsafe.
Lighten up.

Some people are afraid of everything. Their shadow might get them. I do understand about reloading. I would suggest that the two of you meet and work up a load for his rifle. Just double careful on loading his ammo. Other than that good to go. I had friends that worked up load for my 500 smith. In about 2004 or 5. There wasn't much out there on reloads that 500 smith at that time. We got 2100 fps with a 350gr. That's about 3100 fpe. Verified velocity by chronograph. Note that is in a 4" barrel length.

So a few more details about the situation. He is shooting a Savage with a 12 twist and we have shot my reloads in his gun before with no issues. The brass I have has been fired in my gun and resized back to specs and I know he didn't have any issues chambering before. The bullet I have plenty of that I can donate are Hornady 55 grain SP. My plan was stick to book numbers and give a middle of the road load. The issue is the only powders they show that I have are 8208 and Varget, both I would rather keep for my loads. I have BLc2, H4895, Superformance, IMR4350 or AR comp I could part with but that's not listed in the Hornady manual. Anyone have experience with these other powders as I have not used them for 22-250?

IIRCC... 38gr of H380 is the old standard 22-250 go to load.

Thanks for the info. I have picked a powder and bullet and loaded up 5 rounds in that mid range. I plan on shooting them with my rifle and running them through the chronograph to check velocity and monitor pressure. For those of you concerned with liability this post was not asking for liability thoughts, I was just looking at BOOK load data that would be safe for any user. I would put more trust in my hand loads following book values then I would in factory ammo. And those concerned about legality of it, there is always a risk of something bad happening its part of the game we play as shooters. I live in South Dakota which is basically the wild west. We have 3 laws we abide by, eat beef, wear fur, and keep your guns.

I do this for a friend as well. I take the max charge out of the book and stick to Sami spec on the seating COAL. They shoot fine, for his hunting rifle, and don't be afraid of the max powder charge, their max's are quite a bit under any pressure issues….

huh??? I have a few rifles that are running full pressure at less than max. book charges... you can get yourself into trouble quickly with this mindset...
