6.5-06 A Square

Curious why you feel a special action is needed for the PRC. What's wrong with a traditional short action?

Possibly for the same reason that many 6.5-284 shooters use a long action. The magazine limits how far out you can seat the heavier bullets. If a quick followup shot isn't necessary it's sort of a moot point.

I've been loading and shooting the 6.5mm/06 for 30yrs. The best brass is .270 Win necked down. Be sure and check neck clearances. .25/06 necked up can leave you with thin neck walls. With the slow burning powders used, proper neck tension is important.

Why do you say that shortgrass i had great success necking down 30-06 Lapua brass for a 6.5x06AI, I did have to turn the necks for a .296 neck chamber but the thing shoots phenomenal.

Honestly by the time I sort, clean flasholes and other prep work on the WW270wsm brass for my 6.5x300wsm it really doesn't take me any longer to just turn the 06 Lapua brass for the 6.5x06AI
Oh how I wish ADG would have come out with 300wsm brass in june.

I failed to mention the 61mm version is simply a 6.5x47mm Lapua lengthened to 61mm's. This offers common Die Sets and Chamber information for shooters. (Unbelievable this has not been adopted for retail)

I dont mind turning especially if I use what I consider the best brass available.
Off the bench, mine is an honest 3 shot, 1/2" hunting rifle. I can't ask for more, I can't hold 1/2" in the field off of a make shift rest. I always seem to end up in an awkward position, and trying to move into a more comfortable position in the open country I hunt it takes the chance of spooking the game. I fire less than 50 rounds a year through this rifle. In this case, "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

Yeah I agree, ive fought brass issues in the past from fliers and come to find out it was a brass issue so I've found out that using Lapua or ADG type brass gives me less frustration.

funny the article doesn't mention the RCBS 30* shoulder version which I had assumed many considered the standardized or modernized version at one time in history. There's probably an endless amount of variations of the Cartridge.
Here's the 26-06MX.View attachment 273570
This is a new one on me. I have read the story about the origin of the 6.5-06 as a 25 Newton. But don't remember any mention of 26-06 MX. The 30-06 case has serves for many new calibers over my lifetime. I read an article not long ago comparing the 6.5-06AI to the 6.5PRC and it looked to me to be about the same in performance. Thanks for the interest and information.

Speaking of brass I have tried about 7 different types of brass so far and have not found what I think is the ideal brass. I have tried Lake City and Winchester military brass, Winchester commercial, Remington-Peters, PPU in 30-06, Winchester Commercial in 270 and 25-06 Winchester Commercial. The Latter two seem to load easy with less work. However I am not sure you need a neck as long as the 270. This is my first build and it has been a very enjoyable experience. Thanks to all for your comments.

25-06 brass is my favorite. Have used it for years with absolutely no problem. Also used necked down 30-06 , just as successively. Either way is simple. Beats the heck out of struggling to find expensive 6.5 PRC brass.
