One thing to note abut LA Savage's is the lack of stocks available for them. If you have your heart set on a Manners, forgetaboutit. Same for a few other stock mfg's. The story that I get for this is because of where the rear action screw is located. I *think* it's Stockade Stocks that makes Savage specific stocks in varmint & semi-target shapes.

+1 on short Savage stock selection.
I have opened up a wood stock channel for hunting rifle and used Choate on heavy barrel long range setup that worked fine.
More added cost, but James at NSS has Big Horn actions that are really nice because you can use the nut mount or order prefit shouldered barrel for it and set it in a Remington 700 stock.

What kind of barrel life would you get out of a 22-250 with a 1-6.5 twist barrel?

My guess would be 600 rounds.

Probably more like 1700 rounds.

Years ago I had a Savage barrel replaced by local GS. Tried to chamber and nope headspace off. Bought vise, wrench and had gauges. Mustered up and reset the barrel off the gauges. Was PERFECT! And then the builds started and never looked back! Remage? No problem! It is actually fun to build and see how well it shoots. Guess it goes nicely with fly tying, arrow making, lure making! You will find a sense of accomplishment plus reloading when standing over that buck, bull etc! Just realize like eating cashews, never stops!

McMillan will also, but only a few models. For this Game Warden, I had to send the barreled action to them. This is my first that I spun the barrel on. Second was a RemAge. Both shoot very well. It is a 110 LA as a 6.5x284. It needs some TLC to feed well. Something to think about with a 22-250.

You will be happy with your savage barrel project, NSS will have what you need and you will enjoy the bbl. changeover. I would say you can get any barrel and have a chance of it shooting bugholes.........however the criterion and shilen barrels are hard to beat. For a $300 or so price they will perform well and not brake the bank. The criterion I just installed on my 22-250 savage varmint rifle shoot's in the threes and cleans like a breeze. GO For IT! Shooting will get more interesting and hands on.

Putting a Savage (or Remage or other flavor with barrel nut) really is a fairly simple project. I found a new Savage 10 in .308 on GB for a good price a few years back. Sold the barrel and swapped it out for an Xcaliber 1:8 22-250 AI. Just watch a few Youtube vids, pick up a few tools (especially go/no-go gauges) and you'll do just fine!

I have always dreamed of getting a lathe and chambering and threading a custom barrel.(I am the guy that builds his own bow strings too)

Am I reading this correctly? You can buy pre chambered barrels, run em down on a go guage and tighen a lock nut?
You can also just do this to Rem 700 too?(Remage?)

First hour as a member on here and I am feeling stressed already.... this could become an expensive addiction.

And therein lies the problem! Once you walk down this road, no turning back! You will be tearing down your other rifles to build new ones! Its a disease! No an addiction! No CURE!
