300 PRC versus 30 Nosler

Want to see what the LR nation thinks about the comparison of these 2 cartridges. For the record I have them both, and have had the 30N since back before SHOT show in 2015. The 300 PRC didn't seem to match the Nosler performance so I turned it into a 7mm PRC instead and in that cartridge I think it could be one of the best 7MM's available
Question: Why do we chase new sexy when new sexy may not be as good as previously sexy?

Freebore and brass quality(adg) being equal, the 30N will hold a 50-70fps advantage due to its 6-7gr capacity advantage. I had zero feeding issues with my last 30N, it was a custom with a longer freebore, ran 215 Bergers at 3050 w/ N565 very easily. I see zero advantages to the prc unless you're comparing saami chambers, in which these two case will perform the same, and the nosler is seating bullets deep in the case. I feel the 30N at 100gr capacity is the perfect size for heavy bullets at moderate speeds. Want high speed? Well that what the Rum, norma imp, and 300/Lapua are for.

Got a new .300 PRC first of the year. Still feeling it out. Only .30 cal experience prior to this is .300 SAUM. If I had issues getting ammo/brass as some - I would probably be second guessing this choice myself.

Try to source 300 prc components right now... thats how I ended up with a 30 nosler project in the works. If I didn't already have dies and a pile of peterson brass I'd be all over Alex's 300 Wheeler though. That might be the perfect 30 cal magnum.

It wasn't too long ago that the 30 Nosler was the New sexy and the 300 WM was just as good, and not long before that only the young kids had to have magnums. For me, I suspect I like to tinker, so I like em all. The sexy guns of today intrigue me because they are made / designed entirely around long slippery bullets and fast twist barrels... I dig it. But in reality, a third of North American big game was on the brink of extinction at the hands of fellas with sticks and sharp rocks and those other fellas with those new sexy thunder sticks. I suppose this isn't a new question.

I just had a 30 Nosler built and went through a pretty detailed evaluation against the PRC before making a choice. I handload so factory ammo wasn't a consideration. Ultimately, I went with the 30 Nosler to replace my 300WM. My rifle was chambered with a custom reamer with 220 freebore and with AGD brass went over 3100fps with 215 Bergers without showing pressure signs. For accuracy and ES I've found it prefers 230gr Berger OTMs around the 3000fps mark. Overall it seems to run 150-200fps faster than my 300WM. Is that enough to really warrant the new cartridge, well I don't think the game I hunt will notice, but it sure is a pretty cool cartridge!
For someone wanting to shoot 30 cal with factory ammo or get something easier to get into reloading with more brass options I'd struggle to steer them away from the 300WM unless they had a real need for the extra velocity.

I agree with much of what has been said. As stated, I have both a 30N and a PRC but chose to get all the PRC case could offer by turning into a 7MM instead.
I am now having a second 30N built. Have an older 300 RUM with a great barrel on it that I am rechambering into a 30N. Not because it goes that much faster or is more accurate (sub 1/2 MOA is sub 1/2 MOA) it is so I can run longer and higher BC bullets with less powder and still achieve 3000 FPS with less pressure and more chamber life. RUMS burn chambers early
Similar to Hugheserj I am adding more freebore at 220.
Now a person can argue that 75 fps isnt a big deal over the PRC. Perhaps...for 6 grains of powder and the ability to run longer bullets all the way out of the case and use the case to its potential, Ill take the 30N every time

I don't foresee ever owning either. They're both great I'm sure, no beef with them, but I like my plain.300 win mag and if I ever do step up the performance in a 30 cal it'll be a .300 rum, 30-378, or best of all a .30-338 lapua ai.

300 Norma is always a contender in this arena. Not to derail the thread but you can now get Ti Lapua actions at the same weight as most long actions. They may not push a 215 berger at 3300 fps but they are in the 3000-3100 range in a 26" barrel. They are just way more efficient than the faster overbore cases out their. With the mag space they provide you will have zero issues with overbore chambering and pushing the long high BC projectiles everyone wants to shoot.

I built a prc and have trouble with finding components. I wish I built a Nosler The little I have done with the prc has been very good. I had a 3rd hit at 1790yds first time shooting that far running a 230 berger at 2992. I have not shot 100rds through it yet. It is in the middle of a node I saw when doing some testing. No seating tests yet just 3.675coal which is what the seater put it at. I toolk a factory 212 put it in the press and screwed down the seater till it touched and ran the berger up and that is what it came out at. Hornady die set.

I have had a few Noslers and now have a PRC. My PRC is running with or exceeding any Nosler I have had. Barrels play a big role too. I think they are close enough to be considered basically the same type of round. I do think a non rebated case will handle a little more than a rebated case will. The reason is that a rebated case head is under more compression than a non because the pressure vessel in front of it is of larger diameter. The case head is not what determines bolt thrust, its the internal diameter of the case. These are minor differences and if they are throated properly, its a wash in my opinion.

I also don't see a big enough difference between the Nosler, PRC and WM.
The throating thing is mute for me. I run A191 chambers for my LR stuff so there is no advantage with the PRC on a Rem 700 platform.
Recently bought my first 300RUM, just to compare and run some numbers, but still can't source ammo for it or dies (Dies are being located for me by a member here)
Have had a 30-378 Weatherby in the past, but that amount of powder for the velocity gain was just ridiculous...a pound of powder didn't go far. Same thing with my 338-416 Rigby Improved 45°. Powder usage is ridiculous also, but I only shoot that a dozen times and normally only 40 rounds at a time.
I have never really gone for all the hype when new cartridges come out.
I don't have a man bun, in fact I shave my head and have a foot long goatee beard, so no Creedmoor's in my safe.
I have a 6.5x47 Lapua instead. Lol.
