Before I knew anything about 6.5 PRC or 6.5CM I shot my Billy with a 300RUM -200 gr. Accubond, Shot thru front shoulders and made a 1" hole on off shoulder. Fun times for sure. fps was at 3180. Was at about 348 yrds. They are fairly tough animals in my thinking. He tried to get up couple of times but didn't go anywhere. Good luck on your hunt. My hunt was also in my home state of Wyoming

Also... FYI... Maybe just a coincidence but my buddy drilled an Audad 4 times with the 143 Eld-X before it went down.
They are tough... so, there is the need to put some hurt with speed, shock and penetration.
Accubond and Partition come to mind if you have doubt in Ballistic Tip.

Just to clarify... My buddy shot this Audad beginning from 200 yards out to 400 by the time it stopped with a 6.5 Creedmoor and the 143 Eld-X.
I've witnessed failure to anchor game in several situations on whitetail deer as well. Some were blow outs, some were ice-picked... so... I don't recommend them either.

I used 125 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips out of a 10" T/C Contender in 30/30 Win for my only goat. He didn't drop in his tracks (took a couple of shots) but he didn't go far and, luckily, he was not in a spot where he would be falling off any cliffs. Based on seeing several whitetails run after being hit with a 300 RUM or a 338 LM, sometimes with a shoulder hit, I think the key is to get both shoulders and/or the spine. A goat isn't very thick and doesn't have particularly heavy bones, so you don't need that much penetration to get both shoulders.

Congratulations you truly are lucky! This was my 34th year of applying with no luck! As far as bullet in 6.5mm I'd go with the Nosler 140gr Accubond!

Congrats, coming from a sheep hunting and ELR background you are bang on, they are hardy animals and the ranges along with with the wind can get up there. In a .264 cal I'd definitely go with 140,144,156 Berger's. IMHO, because of the above mentioned obstacles you have to overcome I'd go with more horsepower and payload. Any magnum 7mm with 184,190 grains minimum. Any .308 cal mag with 215,230 Berger's, or my go to .338 Edge 300gr OTM's. Realistically any 338 will do the job. My experience with hunting those high peaks is the wind will be you worst enemy. Delivering a round on target at longer ranges can be at the best of times a nightmare. You need heavy grain and high BC bullets. You want accurate hard hitting stopping power and penetration. And a lot of trigger time honing your craft. Good luck, and don't forget to put in a lot of treadmill time! LOL!

Congratulations! I used 140 gr Accubonds in a 280ai three years ago on my mountain goat. Dropped in his tracks at about 150yds. Good luck to ya!

The Billy in my avatar is from my Kodiak Island hunt in 2018. I shot him with a 338 Lapua and the 213gr Hammer Hunter. Shot was 208 yards and I had to put it through his shoulder due to his position. Bullet went through both shoulders with about a 1.5-2" exit wound. Totally destroyed his vitals. He did a 180 upon impact, then fell over before I could get another round chambered. My hunting partner took his at about the same yardage with a 7 Rem Mag and 168 gr VLD. It didn't die instantly and went off the side of the mountain. They spent all day retrieving it from the bottom of the mountain.
My outfitter told me to bring the largest caliber I was comfortable with because you want to pole axe them so they don't run off the side of the mountain. My recovery was much easier than my friends.

The worst bullet failure I've ever experienced by far was a 140 Nosler Balistic tip in a 7mm-08 on a whitetail buck about 25 years ago.

I've killed 20 whitetail deer with factory Remington core lok 140 gr. in my 7mm—08 . All dropped where they stood .

The 142 Nosler ABLR or 124 Hammer Hunter. Both deadly upon impact, neither frag, the Hammer a bit less drop.
