Mountain goat bullet selection.

The worst bullet failure I've ever experienced by far was a 140 Nosler Balistic tip in a 7mm-08 on a whitetail buck about 25 years ago.
They've Re-Designed them from, the early days of, the 1990's !
They have, a MUCH thicker Jacket on them, now.
I'm looking at, running, the 150 NBT's in my .270 WSM,..
IF, the 140 Berger Classic's don't,.. "get it done" !
THEY would be, my next "choice" bullet.
Surprisingly, there are, lots of Happy Hunters using them.

It must be my lucky year, I drew a mountain goat tag for my home state of Wyoming! I have heard these goats are hardy animals. I plan on using a 6.5 PRC for this hunt. Just wondering opinions on a good, consistent bullet to use for this hunt?
They are tough. I like Barnes LRX. Keep it under 300y to be safe. I've seen one take a chest shot that went all the way through and blew off one of its nuts and it ran another 500y shot again in shoulder with Hornady bullet. The LRX made a big hole and dropped him. at 150y

Goat hunts can be real far or up close, talk to the outfitter and whats normal/average and terrain your hunting. Winds? You gonna shoot cross canyon? All this adds up to me to ls the need for a bullet to fly well but also open either at fast or slow speeds....generally a tipped bullet. My recommendation based on results, Nosler Accubond.

If you have a 7.5 twist shoot the 131 Hammer Hunter. I got my load dialed in last week. Shooting under 1/2 moa last week with 20 mph wind gusts at 100 yards.

Try one of the all copper bullets. I have used barnes ttsx bullets for years. These are tough bullets that will stay together no matter what. The barnes are also very accurate but they like to be seated 15 to 40 thousandths off the lands depending on rifle.

Congratulations on your hunt trip!

My kids and I have 7 or 8 elk kills (1 shot) with 143 eldx . I practice at 1400 with that in a creedmoore and it very consistent. Drives deep. The nose fragments. Its the best of all worlds for me. The 2 cows were 515yards

All that aside.... I now have a 26 nosler and 156 Eol in the works

I have only killed one goat. I used a Nosler 150 etip out of my 280 AI. Lots of internal damage. Small entrance, small exit and anchored him. Easy work for the taxidermist. My buddy shot one last year with a 200 gr eld-x. Left a NFL football sized hole on exit. I wouldn't use anything that leaves big holes if you are wanting a full or half body mount. Also if you put an order in for some hammers you will have them in a couple weeks. Current market dictates you should use what you can actually get your hands on🤠

I just recieved a couple of boxes of Hammers and didn't have to wait very long to get them. Most other brands of 6.5's are either in production or distribution to retailers. Gonna take another few months before they catch up.

what are you using now, if it is 140 or more and works good and you like it then stick with it. if looking for a reason to change then work up a load for the 156 burger and see how that shoots
