I started with a 308 Win, and after thinking I'd move on to other cartridges I'm still shooting it.

What cartridge/ rifle got people into shooting target, long range, or hunting? Any cartridge that brings new shooters to our sport is a good round.
For me...I've always been fascinated by guns, since i was little. Learned centerfire and hunting with dads open sight 30-30 and an uncles 303 British. But what got me absolutely HOOKED on bigger guns and trying to hit at distance was when I was 14 (I think), borrowed a family friends Remington pump 30-06 and took my first deer with it from standing about 250 yards. Compared to the 30-30 I felt like I was shooting a cannon and I loved it. I loved everything about it. I loved the big fireball and chest thumping kaboom (pretty sure it was one of the 20 inch barreled ones). I loved the laser trajectory (again compared to the 3030), I just held right where I wanted it to hit and it hit right there, or close enough. I loved the kick (perhaps a bad sign?). It wasn't as bad as dads old single shot 12 gauge but it hit me like it meant it and I strangely appreciated that about it. I loved the power of the thing, the violence it blew up water jugs with, the fact that the exit on the lung shot sprayed red over at least 10 feet of snow! I was hooked. I needed a scoped rifle with horsepower. Parents agreed to get me my own rifle after I got my first deer. Was going to get a .30-06...they were out of stock in the savage 111 package guns we could afford so I settled for a 270. So glad I did. I came to adore the performance of that round even more than the 30-06, no regrets.

now the 243, 270, and 300 win mag do it all for me.

It's easy to purely want something else. It's much harder to be satisfied with what you have.
Enjoy that 30+ year old beast and thanks for your service!
Of all the rifles i have my almost 60 year old 308 model 700 bdl heavy barrel is the most accurate consistent and cheapest to shoot, longest barrel life, most easily available ammo or components thereof and since i reconfigured it without a question nicest to shoot

If what you claim was true then why the need for 26+# 6br variants in PRS. Shooting 1 shot or a group of 3-5 for the day is one thing, shooting 100rounds at a match is another.
Sorry....I must have MISSED the part of your posting where you mentioned the 100 rounds per day and specifically PRS matches where the weight of the gun is even more for the stability of the shooting platform as it is Recoil management for the shooter... specifics...are always good! I can't think of a single shooter I know or have ever been with in my 54 years of shooting has ever fired less than 20 Rds when target shooting in a day and I generally shoot 50+ using three rifles starting with 300 Weatherby, moving to 338 lapua and ending at 50 BMG.... however thanks to our great Canadian leader.....he has spared me the expense of shooting my 50 ( for now)! Have a terrific day all!

I figured I'd move on to other cartridges/calibers that offered better ballistics. The pandemic shortage cause me to dust it off and load for it again. It's still fun to ring steel with it. I may have to set it up to see how far MY limits are with it.
Good choice, I've always had a minimum of two .308's in my safe over the years and shoot them as much as I can, of course along with others but I always come back to my old friends in .308 Win.

I just use my Heavy Savage 110 -M in 308 for target , and I am right now preparing for a Score match with it. I love the way it shoots the 110 Grn Hornady V Max and the 115 Grn Berger FB Target Bullets. Benchmark and 3031 powders seem to work very well with Winchester LR Primers. These target loads would make very accurate medium range ( 300 yards ) 308 varmint loads. The 115 grn Berger's wont open up too much and wont damage the pelts to much , just drill a clean hole through a coyote, like it did , twice , to a 1 1/2 X 1 1/2 wooden target frame .

I used to shoot 195tmk out of my 308 out to 1550yards, took all of my turret and often some reticle holdover, but it was very rewarding when u would ting the plate at 600fps lol
Yeah I was looking at a 195 TMK for a new load. I'd even like to load for the 200's but my PSS is 1-12". If the 168 TMK or ELDM stays stable I may be able to use my dials and holdover out to a mile. We'll see some time this summer.

Mine was 11.25 twist

I'd like a 1-10" or faster. But then again I'm wondering is a 30-06 with 26" barrel would be mo betta for heavies like a 215gr Hybrid. Hehe see my problem ;)
Yeah I worked a load up with my buddies 30-06 and the 212, there was a little advantage, but with the 308 free ore and seating long, pressure signs come around the same velocity with both our rifles and both were 24" barrels
