I started with a 308 Win, and after thinking I'd move on to other cartridges I'm still shooting it.

Today with big bullets and different powders you can make the 308 close to the 6.5 creedmore in ballistics with just a recoil penalty. It is what I use in my classes for 2 reasons. Teaching the importance of recoil management and shoots the same from year to year. The 3 I use all shoot fggm1/2moa or better to distance. Watching students shoot sub 4" groups at 650yds makes you not want to change to a 6.5 or 6mm due to the barrel longevity

Yup MM was using the heavies as others. My PSS has a 1-12 so I figured with the shortage I'll save the 208's for my 30-06. I'm considering building another 308 with a faster twist.

For the guys looking for powder Leverrevolution can make big velocity gains with big bullets. I bought 16#s because it was 165.00 a month ago. Tough to pass on something that works for the 06 and 308 as well as lighter 6.5 bullets.

Interesting. I see that it's near Big Game's burn rate. Nosler has some fast speed using 168 gr bullets and Big Game. Something to keep an eye out for.

.308 is a great round. with the right load and good shot placement i think you could kill just about anything you wanted in north america. maybe not a grizzly or a moose, but anything else is doable.

i have AR's in 6.5 creed and grendel but that's just because i like building AR's. i'm actually planning a .308, 1-10, 16" upper build for my LR308 with a 3-15x or 1-10x.

It's such an easy round to load for. I plan on trying a 168 ELDM when they become available again. There are some 168 TMK's, but I'm waiting on more powders to come online before making new purchases. My go to powders was RL15 and TAC. But with the shortage I'm back to hand trickling IMR 4064 as I had some in supply. H4985 and IMR 4895 works too. That's what makes this round so fun! It can work well with many components.
178 ELDX and RL15, Varget and 8208XBR, all with equar results for me other Than the XBR being slow

Chub Eastman shot a moose up in Alaska using a 30-06 and 165gr Partition. I though it was too light a bullet for moose, but I'm not going to argue with anyone that has his experience. Another guy was using 173 gr FMJ for grizzly, but i agree I'd be using something else. But I have a friend that has a pretty good arsenal including magnums. But he usually takes his elk with a 308 Win and hand loaded 165gr PT's. His best bull fell to that set up. A 3-15X or 1-10X would be sweet. I'm on the cheap so I'm considering swapping a 10X SWFA on my PSS. It's had a VariXIII LR 4.5-14X50 on it for thirty years. Mildot ret and MOA dials lol. The mil/mil SWFA is just easier to play with.

I have some pet loads using 175 SMK's and VLD's and RL15. Maybe some TAC and H4895 too. If memory serves me correctly my estimate velocity was in the 2750 fps range. That's back when I didn't have a chornograph on hand and confirmed my dope out to 900 yards.

H4895 for bullets of 150-180 grains, though Varget is a close second for accuracy.

Been using 308 since the middle 70's.Its way more than a light 30-06 it has it's own mojo on animals.
My cousin was in Viet Nam and used a 308 for sniping.
No one ever got up and he even hit multiple targets with a single bullet.
Of all the cartridges that can do it all the 308 is in that company in my opinion.

SWFA is a great deal. i rocked a 10x on my 700P for several years. it was a great scope for $300 as i was not making much money at the time. fast forward a few years and few more pay raises and i was able to trade it in for $150 toward a 3-15x when they were having a bundle sale. so the 3-15x came with a sun shade, scope covers and maybe a mil-dot master booklet and only cost me around $200 after the trade-in credit.

i'm a big fan of the 1-6 or 1-8's on AR platforms. it's like having a red dot and a scope. i'm not shooting 1000 yards with a 16" .308 gas gun but it would be more than enough magnification to get out to 600-700 yards for plinking as long as you buy a decent scope.
