Wby 30-378 Magnum

I know that the question was about an 30-378whby mag. I have never owned or shot one however I do own an .300whby mag. And my neighbor owns a .300win mag. He has the advantage of cheaper brass and less powder used in a case so his ammo is cheaper than mine. However I can load mild to medium loads of 165-210gr. Bullets and I have a definite advantage of velocity over his rounds loaded medium to hot. And we know that F=M×A so I there by have energy over his .300win mag. I also will have enough case to run the 210gr. Projectiles at 3085fps from an 26" barrel loaded out with 82.5gr of H1000 which is stated to not go below trans sonic till 1800ish yards so a good mile which is well beyond an ethical kill shot in most large game. (In my opinion) I also had a friend from Idaho whi swore by his .300 RUM after we had a talk about the loads and how much powder difference there was between the two for almost the same result he bought the .300whby as to why he never stated. I think that Randy aka The Real Gunsmith has done a superb job In explaining the whole dilemma of the .30cal mags on his video. 300 PRC on YouTube. I believe that an old tried and trued method is best over a new one that is until it has been truly tested and proven. In my limited experience I believe that a more accurate way to compare the .30 mags would not be by bullet diameter but by case capacity alone then we would see who is on the top.

To try to answer the question.
I don't know if it's better to head space off the shoulder or a belt.

I also dont know if the shoulder angle of a PRC, Rem, Win or Whby is superior.

I wish we could take the same case with all the same components and only change shoulder angle and neck length both independently and test the results to have a definite answer to this question. However I think that it is likely the old 30-30 mentioned above that some like one cartridge over the other why??? Because I killed more deer with my .300whby than any other rifle of mine with exception of one. The .22 win mag it's my favorite for the job up close. But there we go again with the whole ethics and legality bit.

Truth is what ever you like is best. And right now ain't a time for change with hard to get bullets and components unless you just like to clean and look at your ri

I believe 22 magnum was legal for deer up until 1957. I also understand that the 30-378 is a barrel burner. Something like half the life expectancy of the 300??

The 7.82 Warbird is a much better cartridge, no useless belt, pointless rounded shoulder angles, shorter case length and optimum case capacity for best velocities with 200 gr and heavier bullets, and is supremely accurate

BUT ... it suffers from highly expensive brass that doesn't last long at peak pressures, same as the 30-378 WBY, you can load both at lower pressures to extend the life of the brass but then the 300 RUM and 300 Norma Mag Imp wildcats come along and stomp on them

I have all three and hunted with them for many years, like them all but the 300 RUM makes the most sense

Well you do realize of coarse that you can headspace on the shoulder as well when using belted cases.
And its been pretty well proven that the shape of the shoulder dosent mean very much as for overall performance.
I might also add that the late Earl Chronister set a 1000 yd 10 shot record at Williamsport in the mid 80s with a 30x378 chambered by the late Howard Wolfe.
While using what is now considered an inferior scope no less,
a Unertle.
The current 10 shot record for heavy gun class is roughly 1/2" smaller.
So yes, we have come a very long way in the last 50 years havent we? lol
So lets not be hammering too hard on the fine old cartridge, at least untill theres more than just opinions to back up the claims.

I test many cartidges (and bullets) on targets and on game... if I retain a rifle chambered in a certain cartridge in it's factory form ... then that means I have a liking for and/or see it's potential (for my use) I've kept the 30-378 Wby, 340 Wby and 300 Wby , and now delving into reworking load data with new powders and bullets for all 3

I am delving into it's usefulness in 264WM, 270 Bee, 300WM, 7STW and my new 300RUM.
Have been using it in my 338-416 Rigby Improved for 9 years, that barrel is getting tired now and will need replacing sooner than later.
Cannot get RE33 or RE50 here in Australia anymore.

Not for the 338, but for sure some of the others like the STW.
Curious as to your velocity with a 300 gr with the improved 416 case?

No, IMR powder has not been imported here since the 90's.
Have been using RETUMBO and RE33, but no Alliant powder is being imported at present either. When my RE33 jug runs out that is it.
I get 3200+FPS with everything I shoot in it. It has a 32" 9" twist barrel.
The 300g Berger OTM was seeing 3280fps.
I use a CNC turned solid of 323g on steel, that gets 3215-3230fps depending on powder, but I'm not pushing them hard.
Brass lasts a long time at the pressures I'm running, over the Pressure Trace II I am only at 58,000-61,000psi.
