Best .277 cal cartridge?

Dearly beloved.... The original Author didn't specify which Bullet merely Caliber. I'd have to agree with you on the Western as I would use it for 130-140 Grain Bullets, and hope to duplicate Hornady RCM 3310fps velocities. We may never know, as the Ammo is only a Ghost for now.

I shoot a .270 Wby with Berger VLDs. Had it rebarreled with a Kreiger 1:10. The factory barrel was toast. Haven't tried it on elk but wouldn't hesitate to. Great for muleys and antelope. Use the 30/378 for elk.

I absolutely love my 270 wsm with 130 Hornady sst for whitetail. Very dramatic kills . It'll flatten them as quick as lighting

My favorite has to be the 270Wby with the 110 grain TTSX at 3800FPS. Absolutely beats the wind to 400 yards and really makes a nice hole. I would not use this one on anything over 400 pounds as we have had some limited penetration on a couple of bigger deer with quartering to shots on the shoulder. Dead deer, but could have been trouble if we would have needed another 4 or 5 inches of destruction.

I spent many years with the 270, starting with the 270 Winchester, graduating to the 270WSM shortly after its introduction. With a 150gr bullet at 3100 FPS it was my first cartridge used for +500 yard hunting, proving to generate sufficient terminal energy to be deadly on the big Alberta deer at the longer ranges. Can't say whether it's the best of the 270's but it proved to be easy to load, and very accurate with manageable recoil in a handy SA Model 70 Supergrade.

Wouldn't offer any benefit over the 260 rem or 7-08 other than fewer 270 bullet options
Nope, but it would be a fun option to match or close to the new 6.8 Western....and more bullet options than you would think 90 gr to the new 170/175 gr options and plentiful brass.

No way it would get close to the 6.8 western you'd probably lose 300fps to the western.
You can get 80-195 gr bullets in the 6.5 or 7mm version respectively so again no advantage.

I have a 270 win and 270 WSM. I added an 8 twist to my 270 wsm after I smoked the first barrel. I got about 6 years out of the stock Tikka barrel. Well it sure turned that 270 wsm into a monster. With the 170 Berger at 3020 fps it has become my favorite and best 277 cal. I have killed a half dozen elk now out to nearly 800 yds. Another 8 mule deer bucks, few bears and handful of hogs. One shot on every animal so far. That rifle really carries the mail and has become my favorite. I still shoot the 270 win as it was my grandfather's with 129 lrx here in California. So, the 270 wsm may not be the best 270 out there, but it is the best in my safe.
