Is there a better long range 30 cal cartridge out there ?

I don't know if it is the best 30 cal for long range they all have there pros and cons, I know that it holds the most powder by 20gr over lets say a RUM which is a staple as far as long range is concerned. Yet even with that extra powder capacity you can't take advantage of it as much as you would think you can, you end up using a lot slower powder to fill the case and that takes away they advantage you should have had. The primmer pockets are the weak link heck they are on all of them but seem to be more weak than it's counterparts and with the price that they get for the brass You would think it would be able to sustain more firings and endure more of a beating.

Try the 300 Allen Express :)

"Allen Xpress is on the top of the performance ladder easily matching the performance of the MUCH larger 30-378 Wby yet doing so with roughly 12 grains less powder capacity and also much shorter over all length in ammo making it easier to chamber in repeating receivers."

Bullet Weight Velocity(28-30" barrel length)
200 grain 3450-3500 fps
210 grain 3400-3450 fps
240 grain 3200-3250 fps

3500 fps with a 200 SMK using 112 gr H 570 in a 30/378 with a 36" barrel has been being done for about 50 years.
H 870 or WC 872 will do it also, but it requires 6 or 7 more grains, and a day that isnt real cold.
I guess id have to see it done with the shorter barrels.
The 200 gr out performs the heavier ones anyway out to beyond 1500 yds as for clicks needed to get it there.
And not very many here will be raising their hand as for killing anything that far.
Especially in PA.

Could you guys address:

1) the sloping case shoulder for ease of chambering?

2) the belted case?

Good? Bad? Indifferent?

I wouldn't call it a case (no pun intended) of "diminishing returns"....but you're getting a pretty small velocity boost related to the powder % increase! If efficiency means little.....it's a "hoss"! memtb

There are different mindsets involved with most everything we do.
But for those who hunt long range and prefer a 30 caliber, and who wait a whole year for the season to come, and maybe then have only a day or 2 with suitable conditions, and now were going to discuss efficiency? EFFICIENCY?

I wasn't clear with my post, for which I apologize! I was actually responding to the post by "scope-eye".....in which he was quite accurate with his post. I was merely reenforcing the obvious, when comparing the RUM to the Bee.

If we really want to speak of efficiency and no other attributes into the equation, involving a .30 cal.....the conversation would likely end with the 308 Win.! 😉 memtb

The 7.82 Warbird is a much better cartridge, no useless belt, pointless rounded shoulder angles, shorter case length and optimum case capacity for best velocities with 200 gr and heavier bullets, and is supremely accurate

BUT ... it suffers from highly expensive brass that doesn't last long at peak pressures, same as the 30-378 WBY, you can load both at lower pressures to extend the life of the brass but then the 300 RUM and 300 Norma Mag Imp wildcats come along and stomp on them

I have all three and hunted with them for many years, like them all but the 300 RUM makes the most sense

currently working up a load for the 30-378 with new powders/bullets that weren't available 10 years ago, then gonna play with the 7.82 Warbird again with same

The 308 Win doesn't even belong in this conversation .... waiting for the 30-30 guys to pipe up with the idiotic " the 30-30 has killed more game than blah blah blah "
my usual response to that drivel is "at what range ?"

The .308 Win. comment, was my response to a statement that stated that efficiency should not even be considered whem comparing a RUM to a Bee.

If your reading comprehension were better, you would have observed the "tongue in cheek" response using the .308 Win as an example of pure efficiency. It was not supposed to suggest that the .308 Win. was a competitor in the long range "game"!

Your pointed and unwarranted comments pertaining to the case shape inadequacies of the 30-378, and the "drivel" remark.... only solidifies your apparent lack of common civility! memtb

Yup... there are better lr rounds. The 300 rum comes to mind; the 338 Lapua and it's variants, 338 rum, 300 win isn't too shabby... 7mm stw and 300 roy will work though the roy can be harder to get shooting (been there with a buddy's Accumark).

I'm cracking along at 3350 fps with 180's, 3200 fps with 200gr pills, and 3,000 fps with 235gr pills in my factory barreled 300rum's (26")... They get along just fine on a normal barrel length and actually have some semblance of bore life. I would probably be just fine with my 300win and 7mmstw if the rum had not come along.

All this quibbling about a round that would be obsolete had a smaller company not kept it alive... Makes me wish Roy had liked the 405 instead of Teddy...

Ka-Boom.....a big big banger .... bad medicine...shells today from Weatherby are $600.00 for a box of 20....lol....if you can find them...special, buy 4 boxes and they'll give you a free rifle
