Need some input on a cartridge I drew up

So I have played around designing cartridges for years. I think I might be interested in bringing this one to life. So drawing on the knowledge of the people on this site. Is there already a round like this one, shoulders with Weatherby radius's, cut it back a little to give room for long heavy bullets but still fit in a mag action. I know it's similar to a few other cartridges in case capacity.

Second part is for people that have actually went through the process recently, cost of the reamer, dies and anything in that department I don't know about. Recently bought and had a barrel reamed and put on an action so I got that piece. Thanks

For your first concern, be prepared for others' opinions. When I had mine, I just did it.

For your second, prices will vary. Go directly to the reamer manufacturer (mine was from Manson's). The same is true for the dies (mine was from Whidden's). "If" you need or prefer a hydraulic forming die, it would be an additional cost (mine was from Whidden's). Good luck!

If your pocket book says do it then by all means go for it. I would have either Manson or JGS do the reamer, dies your gonna have to get them made from your print or figure out how to fire 3 pieces of fired brass to send in unless its a simple neck down which it doesn't look like it is.
Personally I enjoy Wildcatting I also feel it makes you a better reloader because you have to think outside the box.
I did the same think with a 17 cal about 15 years ago now I have 4 of them.

I've done two over the years: 9.3/375 flanged in a custom Winchester single shot replica and a 338 on a 300 H&H case (just opened up the neck) on a Browning B78 single shot. Manson reamers, Redding for the custom dies. Ordered custom reamers (chamber finisher & resizing reamer for die makers) at about a 25% premium over the cost of "standard" reamer prices. Couldn't find paperwork for the dies but they were custom full length in the standard two die set. Seems to me price was in the low $300 range. I'm betting that wait times on custom dies in the current environment are running years in the making. Good luck, it's definitely fun to have your own cartridges. Puts a big smile on my face just to go out and shoot something nobody else has!!

Nothing wrong with it but in reality what does it really gain over existing cartridges for all the expense and time...can't imagine the wait and expense for the reamer and dies but if you gotta have it and your wallet says what the heck, good luck

This game is a lot about education, and entertainment. You'll learn a bunch, and have some fun.
You'll pull out some hair over the delays, it will take longer than you think.
You'll meet most of the nay sayers "you'll shoot your eye out kid" types.
If you want it, and can afford it go for it!

Manson and JGS are great sources for the reamers and gages. I wouldn't bother with PTG.

For dies you can talk to either Whidden or CH4d. I've had dies made by both outfits and can recommend both. Don't overlook the Hornady Custom shop either. Another option would be to order a die reamer and have a smith make the dies for you using a set of Newlon die blanks. If a smith can chamber a barrel, he can make a die. Then you just need to have them hardened.

I'd budget $250-300 for reamers and headspace gages, more if you get a die reamer. Add another $300 for custom dies. Whatever timeline anyone gives you, add 6 months.

Wildcatting is a labor of love. I've had 12 wildcat reamers made over the years and every single project has come in over budget and months (or years) behind schedule. I swear that every project will be the last time I deal with the hassle, then I wake up in the middle of the night with a great idea that nobody else cares about......

I might have missed it ,but what cartridge are you basing your new design off of? What brass are you going to fire form? I like the 7mm.

X2, what is the parent, and will it be a crush fit and fire form, or create a false shoulder/fireform situation? And if no parent, you must have a line on some custom made brass, if so what are your thoughts there?

We are on this earth for a very short time,heck even trees live longer than man does so if you can leave a legacy like that then if you can afford it I say go ahead.
I'll leave behind 2 safes,one for guns and the other for loaded ammo and bullets,powders and Primers.

Whidden doesn't do double radius custom dies. I have to get mine from Hornady or CH4D.

Hey Coyote, it started as a Rem Ultra mag, I wanted no belt and the Wby radius shoulders, a bit longer neck, but a bit shorter over all case length. So I can fit long heavy bullets without seating them past the neck. Not sure if it'll ever get past this stage but it was fun playing around and designing it. Take Care, Rick
