With spring on the horizon here, I'm getting antsy and thought a fun poll might liven things up for me as I wait for the snow to melt so I can start shooting rocks in the hills again.
I've always been a fan of the 270. My Great Uncle, who was a significant influence on me growing up, owned two hunting rifles: a Remington 722 chambered in 257 Roberts and his "Big Gun", a Remington 721 chambered in 270 Winchester. He's hunted all over the west with those two rifles and grew up hunting elk in the Blues of Southwestern Washington with his 257, prior to stepping up to what he still considers his "big" 270. That 270 was recommended to him by Mr. Jack O'Connor himself at the local gun store he frequented as a teenager. So to say my view of this cartridge has been tainted from an early age may be an understatement. Even though I continually flirt with all things magnum, I seem to always be drawn back to the super vanilla, plain old 270 WCF.
On to the fun part...
With components currently so rare, let's assume you can choose one, or maybe two, different bullets to hunt the lower 48 with. I'm not including bullet weights, because obviously twist rates dictate what works in each rifle. If you choose something heavy, I'll assume you have a faster than typical twist.
I'm not sure which I'd choose as a do it all nut am curious if anyone thinks there is such a wonder bullet for this round.

I selected "other" as I still think the Nosler Partition (Swift A-Frame) are the standard all other hunting bullets are weighed up against. Not long-range bullets, but when you put the big bears in the picture, they have to be one of the best options. Taking the big bears off the table, the Accubond is a pretty solid all around choice. I do love the mono's for their penetration though (Barnes & Hammers.)

I've had lots of experience with my 270 but not with a lot different bullets. Selected other as the old fashioned hornady interlock soft point gets my vote based on experience. 130 and 150 flat base, 140 btsp, all work great, all shoot well. My choice is the 130 if I have to, for whatever reason it penetrates no less than the others in my experience and is more violent along the way, faster killing on deer anyway.

for true all purpose all game all distance performance id vote other again, for the Federal trophy bonded tip or newer terminal ascent. But the older design 140 trophy bonded tip would be very very hard to beat at doing anything you'd ask a 270 to do.

I would go hornady eld. I have found them to work reliably so I dont see a reason to change. My second choice would be the berger

I forgot about Federal's offerings, mostly cuz I have no experience with them. The Trophy Copper does sound interesting and I'll have to do some research on this Terminal Ascent you mention. I've had great luck in the past with every rifle I've tried a Hammer bullet in, so it's become my go to, but I may need to see how the Federal options compare.
This is exactly the reason I added an "other" option. I knew I'd learn something new and possibly better too. Thanks!

I only owned one .270 Win in my lifetime, it was a Winchester M70 Pre 64 a beautiful rifle of its day, and wickedly accurate'..., it was manufactured in 1953 or 54 as I recall... I pretty much' shot hand loads using Sierra 150gr GK SPBT it pretty much did the job and I had no reason to change... with that said; I was a fool to have traded off that rifle, oh my... the things we discover as we get older. So with the new bullet out there today I'd say it's a horserace as to which is the best.

for a do it all bullet I would look at the 145 shock hammer bullet its not a high bc bullet meant for long range but to 500 should be a tremendous killer
I don't have any experience with the Shock Hammers, so I'm curious what it might offer that the 124gr Hunter wouldn't be capable of providing too...?
