I would say a 260AI, it would fit perfectly between my Rem 6mm AI and 280AI. It will be in the safe someday.

I will say I built a .280ai after a few suggestions and a lot of reading.

I was thinking of a fun subject to discuss. Let's say you have a chance to buy a custom hunting rifle that is broken in, has a load developed for it, and has less than 300 shots on it, what cartridge would you want? This rifle will basically be an all around hunting rifle, capable of shots out to 800+ yards. It will not be fancy or built for a specific role. The rifle will weigh less than 10lbs scoped, have a 26" barrel, muzzlebrake, and built with high quality components. If ammo and reloading components weren't an issue, what chambering would you want? Thanks!

I'd say 7mm something that has 80-85gr capacity. Will push high BC bullets over 3k fps ans still have good barrel life. However a 300wsm does it all with even better barrel life.

I'ma stay away from all the Hornady crap and offspring, WSM & Nosler cartridges provide better performance at same case length and in same actions, then the Norma Mag based stuff is even better, why spend your hard earned $$ on a 3rd rate ugly over glamourized hooker when the cute gal Norma Jean Riley is next door & tons more fun

6.5 X 284. or .260 don't leave the 6.5mm out of the equation. The 6.5 has been and still is one of the most popular bullets ever made and just see what they have been are are using in Europe. The 6.5X55 probably took more African animals than any other cartridge. the 260 Rem will reachout and touch at 800yds then add the 6.5 X 284 with the correct bullet good to 1K yds. Plus reloading you can go from 85 gr to 153gr + bullets for any small or big animal.

I'll second the 6.5x284 Norma and the 6.5x55 (Ackley Improved). Both are excellent cartridges and neither is to overbore. I know that super short magnums are all the new rage but these two have been getting it done for years and they just plain work.

280 ai is a good cartridge slightly faster then the 284 win, which is good as well and making a come back with faster twists and higher bc bullets. I am torn between the 2.
But I think am going to go with the 284 win. with a 9T or 8.5T. Only because Ive wanted one for a while. Even though the 280ai will outperform it slightly.

The 6.5x284 is nice antelope/deer cartridge!. Since 2010, I have shot over a couple dozen antelope, furthest out to 1188 yards using 140-142gr VLD;s at 2975-3025FPS. Over 1000 rounds through my rifle with zero throat erosion, and it still keeps its shots in a softball sized target at 1000 yards....

I think the .270 Weather Mag would be a caliber to consider . 110; 130;140 ;and 150 grn bullets if it had a 10 twist, add the 170 grn. Berger bullets if your dream rifle has a 9 twist . The caliber deserves a 26 inch sporter weight barrel. 130 Grn bullets at 3375 fps , with a 300 yard zero, are capable of taking Whitetail , Blacktail , Mule deer and Antelope out to 700 yards, if that is a requirement . Leupold Vari X 3 8.5X to 25X Power,30mm tube with the dial customized to your pet load, would round off this long range hunting package. Easy loading with with IMR 4350 and H 4831, and Rel 26 . Fed 215 Mag Primers . Unicorn powders would be /could be fun to play with , but really not necessary . IMHO ( yes I have one)

The 6.5x284 is definitely one on my list to build. I have always liked this cartridge. It's often overlooked nowadays, but will always be one of my top picks.
