I am falling apart ...

I have my surgery this coming Monday. Hopefully it doesn't slow me down much. We just moved and bought a new house last month and there is so much to do that I don't have time to be laid up for long. The new place has a big hot tub and a 30 x 40 in ground pool that is 10 foot deep at the diving board end and we will be opening it next week or the following week.

Getting old really gets in the way of getting things done sometimes.

After reading all these posts on all our various ailments from getting old(er), I wonder if y'all have the same "torture chamber" setup in basement?
You know, the standard items you find in all basements of old geezers:
  • neck traction hanging from floor joists?
  • inversion table?
  • floor pad for stretching or just getting flat on floor?
  • free weights? You know the light ones and not the hulk setup.
  • cabled weights on pulleys for extensions?
  • heavy elastic bands for darn near everything?
  • water jugs for who knows what?
  • inclined board setup?
SO what else?

TENS machine, stationary bike which doubles as an excellent towel rack.

Great news Feenix. Glad to hear your good to go...for now. Nearly 20 years ago I was in a motocross wreck. Broke my shoulder and tore up a bunch of stuff in that same shoulder. Dr said I needed surgery after the bones mended. Said he needed to sew up a tear and see if any other damage occurred that he couldn't see on the scans. I declined getting surgery after the bones healed. I did my own PT for the shoulder then went back into my regular workouts. Turned out my strength in my workouts were better than ever and have been ever since. I can tell something isn't right in that shoulder but strength is great and very little pain on ocassion. My point is, the Dr said at the time he examined me after the accident, it'll require surgery. He said now or later, doesn't matter, I'd need it eventually. Sounds like that's your end game also. I'm gonna buy as much time as I can and keep the workouts going. It may be necessary one day but I'm gonna max out that date. I don't have time to lay around recovering from surgery. There's just no room on my calendar and I'm retired.

Get well. Gonna suggest you self medicate with bourbon and ibuprofen 👍
I know this probably won't be well taken here, but after watching what cancer can do and what edible THC/CBD can do......if you're going to self medicate, I'd suggest something that won't cause you further harm.
I dabbled a bit back in college, really never cared for the stuff, but seeing what it can do for pain without any negative side effects in comparison to opioids/ Tylenol/ booze, it's actually a good option. It isn't just for hippies and stoners anymore! if your dealing with chronic pain, it's better than what the doc is gonna give you. Synthetic legal heroin, a good dose of booze, or eat a leaf.
I know, I know......I'll take my beating.....you don't have to tell anyone.....it works.

Just picked up on your issues. I had neck issues for years after a work injury in1976 and ultimately had a pinched nerve in the C5-C6 space in 2007. Worse pain I ever had. Like you Neurosurgeon said no surgery. Physical Therapy was the key to recovery. Had another flareup and back to PT. Third time I went to a Chiropractor and that has worked for the last 8 years.

I hope you have this kind of success. Good luck with the shoulder.

Elastic tube bands, foam log for stretching the shoulders and pecs, yoga mat, gym membership for treadmill and elliptical since we don't have basements here in the South!

On Oct 3 2020 I bought a new carbon fiber road bicycle; on my first ride the next day I was flying (35 or 40 mph?) on a slightly downhill road closed to vehicles and had two coyotes run out in front of me. Next thing I remember is the paramedics tending to me. I broke seven ribs, smashed my clavicle, and broke my scapula in several places. Had surgery the next day to implant metal along my clavicle. Had to cancel an elk hunt in CO and deer hunt in MN. Been in physical therapy six hours a week since.

But I have been able to run since early December. I run four miles every other day; I ran four miles this morning at 5 am. I will be 62 in two months. My advice to anyone is to maintain your fitness. Step on the scale every day - keep the fat off your gut. Get your annual physical. Go to the eye doctor every year and get checked for glaucoma (I skipped four years since I had no vision problems - bad idea - I have glaucoma and have lost some field of vision in my left eye). Wear hearing protection always (I have major hearing loss in my left ear).

Just a quick update. I hope it is OK to post pictures; if not, please delete them. It looks worst than it is, but I am healing well. The doc took the stitches out yesterday.
