257 Build?

I have a 257 Roberts AI 40degree shoulder. I had a 98 mauser rebarreled years ago (20-30). It's a joy to shoot. I used 100 to 110 grain bullets for hunting. I think it has a 10 twist. I was thinking a 9 twist might work better now. I wouldn't mind another on a more modern trued action. At least I have lots of brass.
Is a 257AI the same as mine?

It may seem like an odd question, but how's the recoil on a .257Weatherby??
Im considering one for my young nephew, who wants to get into deer hunting so bad, and has no one to take him....his Dad doesn't hunt. I have my own 2 boys to deal with but I'm gonna try to get him in the mix. He's 13 but all skin and bones.
I know the .257WBY isn't bad, but compared to a .260 how's it kick??
I know a .243 or 6mm would be perfect but if the nephew changes his tune and loses interest, old uncle Mark (yours truly) has always wanted a .257. Gotta look at all the possible outcomes. Lol
Not bad at all....I started shooting a 25-06 at 11, I found that a 257 has a lot of bark--but not much bite. Start him with a good set of ear protection, and let him bust some water bottles at a 100 yards--they explode, and he will be hooked. We have used a suppressor on one of my 257,but with a 24in barrel and a 6 inch suppressor--makes it loooong...257 weatherby might be my favorite overall round. Light recoil, made shooting long range somewhat achievable before all the scopes and do dads were available. I remember making a 560 yard shot in 1997--and that was a long way at the time...it's a laser beam...

Had a .250AI for years. Finally turned it into a 6.5SLR.
Had a .25-06AI built too. Shot that barrel out and built a .280AI.

Was without a .25 for a year, and got the quarter itch again. Built a fast twist 25SST, and it is amazing. 131 @ 3238fps suppressed from a 26" with a moderate load of H1000.

I've built fast twist 25 saum, 3x 25creeds, 25sst and soon to be a 257 blaser (basically beltless wby that's almost done) all have done what they have stated to do. The sst has been the biggest disappointment, it holds 1.5gr less than the saum yet will not go much over 3100fps from a 26" barrel without ejector marks. This is the second barrel that has been slow as proof warrantied the first, I purchased new preformed brass and broke it in low psi, now there's 150 rounds on it, and still getting bolt lift and ejector marks with low charges of H1000 and slow speeds. It's been frustrating!

Any reasons for going 25 SAUM, rather than 25-300 WSM? I'm down to one of those two.

You had a dud barrel on the 25SST.
My 26" 25SST does an easy 3238fps with a moderate load of H1000. Had almost 3400 during testing. N565 or RL23 speeds it up even more.

I've had two dud 25sst barrels from proof then! 58.5 H1000 is 3080-3100 and showing ejector marks and giving light bolt lift. This just puts a bad taste in my mouth. My 6.5 max goes 3130 with 156s from a 26" bartlein with N570 just before ejector marks.

That sucks! I run 59.0gr H1000 w. 131 BJ. Had up to 61.5gr before I ran out of case space, never really hit pressure. Just couldn't fit any more powder.

Since the 6.5x284 is so successful, I'm surprised that I don't hear as much buzz about the merits of the 25x284. Maybe there's some reason I'm not aware of.
The 25-284 is a great round! Got my reamer from blackjack to try their bullets. 3200 no problem - bullet supply just not reliable. Tried the 121gr (?) Hammer.never going back to BJs. The Hammers shoot <.5 to 400 yds consistently. Kill well too!
Mine is on long R 700 with 26" Brux barrel.
