I've been looking for a budget, under 1500$ 338 RUM or 338 Lapua bolt action, and everything is sold out, and god only knows if or when the Remingtons will ever be built again.

Is there a good candidate for conversion to one of these calibers that I might find used? I would be happy with an MOA or slightly higher gun. I don't do competition nor extreme long range shooting.

Ideas?

Thanks!

Anything I say to that question is liable to get me shot in the butt here....

I have 50 Beowolf, and Winchester Model 70 30.06, among several other, much lesser calibers. I want to round out my collection with a true, long range powerhouse.

Please, I've done a good bit of research, and narrowed it down to these two as my choices and if the guns were available, would already have one of the two. Yes, I would like something with a 26 to 28" barrel, at least.

If you're open to putting a rifle together, I have a Weatherby Mark V action in the .585 (Lapua) bolt face with a Timney trigger that would make for a cheap donor action. PM me if interested.
Yes, I might be interested. So I'm guessing I would need to buy a barrel and have it installed and headspaced, and a stock from Boyds if available. What do you figure my "all in" price would end up looking like, and HOW do you send PM's in this forum?

I punched every button, and got no PM option...

vette , I think you need 5 or 6 more posts before you can send pm's and use the classifieds .

I shoot long range with a few guys just about weekly weather permitting . I've had a 338 Lapua , 3 more have been bought since I've started shooting with them . the guys are buying the savage that comes in a chassis , it has a 30" bbl . I replaced the trigger for the one guy . the other guy is using the factory trigger , it's pretty heavy pull . the third guy is still deciding on a scope . the two being used the guys have added all the weights to the chassis , making them I'll guess 20 pound + rifles . the savage seems to shoot well , especially for a factory barrel . these were hard to get , I'm not sure if they are more available yet . in the rear is one of the savages , mine is in front . I think they are buying these savages for between $1500 - $2000

here is one that I have not seen yet . he is still deciding on the scope . I got these two guys hooked up , and Bill bought it . I was talking with Bill over this past weekend , he said it's a nice rifle .

If you can find the RPR or Savage on sale or a used one that people aren't being ridiculous about, you would be "near" $1,500. I run a 338 Norma and my buddy runs the Savage Lapua. No doubt, the Savage is a shooter. Keep an eye out for a realistically priced used rig or an action. If you can pick up an action, you're in business. When you can order a barrel (Brux might be shipping, Rock Creek isn't taking orders, I think Bartlein is back ordered etc) you should be between $300 and $500 for that. Keep the twist in the 1:9-1:9.4 range. That'll have to be reamed, threaded and bedded so say ~$500-ish unless it's a pre-fit in which case you can do it at home. The chassis is your personal preference but look at KRG, MDT and yes, Boyd's among others. Remington and Savage are the 2 most popular footprints with Tikka coming on strong in the chassis/stock world. You can spend a bunch of money on a chassis so be careful.

I have a 338 RUM that I could sell. It's got a 24" benchmark barrel with brake on a Sako TRG.

Yep, you need 10 posts to PM someone. If you click on a username it should have an option to "start conversation" and I don't see that when I click on yours.

It depends on how you're looking to set yourself up with a brake, rail, etc. coatings, etc., but you can figure $300+/- in labor for a basic chamber/thread/install, roughly $300+/- on a barrel, and whatever you want to spend on a stock. There are takeoff synthetic stocks on eBay and Gunbroker every now and then for $150 or so. A new Bell and Carlson is $300, an AG Composites around $500.

Vette I would jump on that Weatherby Mk V action offer. I will let you know how my build goes well it is done I just need to shoot it for real.

It's just feeling like I may be getting in over my head by building my first powerful LR rifle at this time. The Mark V action is an excellent one, and I appreciate the offer, but I'm feeling a bit too far out of my element to build an LR shooter rather than buy one somewhat "turn-key" so to speak.

I can machine and build an AR in my sleep, bed stocks, do crown jobs, etc., etc. But here in high power, long range land, well as I said, I'm feeling "over my head" for a scratch build.

Appreciate the help though...

P.S. I have a lot more posts, and a good many "likes", as "Vettepilot". (Instead of Vettepilot555) I ended up with two profiles 'cause I inadvertently unsubscribed to "Newsletter-Trending Threads." Management said there was nothing they could do to get me my daily LRH e-mails back, so I created this new profile to get them back.
