Going on an Axis Deer hunt next week - question

I've noticed our local population doing fine... counted 17 in my front lawn two days ago.. my father-in-laws place down the road still has a large herd.. and I spotted the ~38" buck I've been chasing on his place (he was crossing the road) yesterday. I'm in Boerne.. got down to 5deg here. Where are y'all hearing they were effected most? I know other African exotics that took a big hit around here.

Hello everyone.
I am going on an Axis deer hunt next week. (Texas). It will be my first Axis hunt. Should my bullet selection and shot placement be the same as shooting a white tail?

I will be using my 6.5 CM Tikka T3x Lite. What ammo would you guys use? I have Win Deer Season xp 125 gr., Core-Lokt 140 gr , and Nosler BT 140 gr.

The shot will likely be 150 yards or less and my Tikka shots all of these rounds pretty much the same. Any advice would be appreciated.
Yes the same as White tails

I would lean towards the heavier bullets from your choices. Make your selection planning for the worst shot, not the best. Just me, but I want an exit wound and to minimize "explosive" bullet expansion that can lead to lots of blood shot meat if you end up with less than ideal shot placement. I want every ounce of that delicious flesh. Opinions vary, just mine.
Shot placement is the same. Although a lot of the bucks may be a bit bigger than the local whitetail, they don't seem to be particularly hard to knock down.

We eat the whole thing, from backstrap all the way down to the shanks (osso bucco). My wife can make a crowd fight over a savory pot of venison ankles.

Hard winter for exotics in Texas. Heavy snow in December and then the big freeze later. A couple of landowners and outfitters told me a complete loss of all yearlings and major losses of adults in pastures without heavy cover and supplemental feed. Photos were heartbreaking, stacked like cordwood on trucks and trailers. Unfortunately, appeared to have minimal affect on Californians. 😆

Good luck and let us know. Pics or it didn't happen!

Yes. I hope to post pictures. It is next weekend 26th-28th.

Vitals are more forward that white tails so it's Best to aim center front shoulder and break it. If you error slightly on the high side you'll spine him. They are very hardy so make sure they are expired before you approach or your trophy might run away.
Have fun and good hunting!

Jeffrey, I shot two Axis doe in Hawaii (lucky draw for a hunt on the island of Lanai while we were still living in Hawaii.) Saw some incredible racks on a number of Axis bucks, but the draw was for does only. I shot both with a 6.5 Creedmoor using Federal Non-Typical 140 gr Soft Points. Both were a bit smaller than a typical Whitetail doe and both were downhill shots. One was and angled shot from about 70 yards and was through the heart and caught one lung. That doe ran about 40 yards and expired. The other was a steep downhill shot from 210 yards (rangefinder) that went high and severed the spine, causing it to fall right where it stood. (better lucky than good...) As others have said, the meat was outstanding. My wife grew up in NW PA and hunted Whitetail from the age of 12. Our experience with the Axis venison matches that of others. It was the best venison either of us has ever tasted. Since we are now in the Pacific NW, we are considering a Texas Axis hunt in the near future. Good luck on your hunt.

Axis originate from India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka

My brother and his daughter just got back from central Texas. She shot a great buck in the velvet. One beautiful trophy. She is getting a euro mount where they freeze the horns to secure the velvet. Then a rug from the hide.

Talked to a buddy who guides on a ranch in the hill country he said their herd was not hurt to much during the freeze he also said they fed three times a day for that week not feeders but trailers being dumped along roads he said he saw animals coming out he had never seen on the property before so hopefully the ranch you are going to hunt did the same
