Hello:
I'm looking for opinions on what caliber you would recommend for ranges out to 650 yards or so, using 180 grain bullets, or similar. It would be strictly for hunting, in a bolt action, and be delivered via a 20-22" barrel...without a muzzle break. The lighter the better , and no, recoil is not an issue. i'm looking for a heavy hitter in the .30 caliber class.
The .338 was the first thing that came to mind though I am hopeful for feedback. I love short barreled big bore rifles, and with a thumbhole stock I feel at one wit my gun,
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
One thing to remember is the availability of ammo. Unless you drive and carry you own, you might have to buy Factory, and that might influence your choice. We all have heard the horror stories of lost bags in the Airports.

Being ex-mil I'm a fan of 30 cal, but for heavy punch at range the usual suspects come to mind. 338 Norma, Lapua, RUM's, and a whole host of boutique cartridges. Payload is hard to beat! Larger brick at a higher impact velocity equals all the everything's associated. Physics being not just a good idea, but the law. If recoil and or portability are not issues, the proverbial field of artillery is wide open for you 'Bra'! Good luck and please share your selection with the group. I'm keenly interested in the final product choice.👍👍

Yeah it work pretty good for what I hunt with it
I have a Savage 16 with accustock and an after market trigger that I can't get to shoot 130gr or 140gr bullets. I've order a prefit from X-Caliber with a 7.5 twist hoping it shoots better with heavier high BC bullet. What are your thoughts.

Not what anyone that has one on order wants to here.......... X caliber seems to be hit or miss. Some guys speak well of them with no complaints. I figure most barrels are OK but they sure seem to have higher dud rates than other established match barrel manf. I know for a fact gunsmiths have sent multiple barrels back for being out of spec. You may get a very good barrel 🤷 Working up loads and shooting groups is the only way to really know for the end user.

There are enough people happy with their x-caliber prefits and blanks that have commented in xcaliber threads, if you do a search, to give you a warm and fuzzy feel. In the end, the barrel either shoots or it doesn't. Since you already ordered, its sort of moot. If it turns out to be a real shooter; for that setup it does not matter how many bad vs good barrels they have spit out.

For me personally, knowing what I have seen reported I would choose not to use them given the other choices out there.

When you get off the teat of factory ammo and rely on yourself generally you stock up on em. Also we are taking hunting rifles. I have many and shoot them all throughout the year but that's maybe 100 rounds a year per gun. Before everyone lost their minds you could get 1000 for $35-$45 depending on where so most of us "non mainstream cartridge people" are less affected than a person who must use factory ammo.
Who said I was on the teat of factory ammo? Who said I don't have a supply? I shoot my big game hunting rifles more than 100 rounds each per year and like to replenish my supplies. My question was in regards to some suggesting non mainstream calibers to people who may not have been into reloading when supplies were affordable and plentiful.
