30-06??

R, you will be able to shoot 5-700 yds. At 67 that's a long way to walk to recover an animal or a target 🎯.
I don't know how old you are, but I'm 67 and I regularly walk 1,000 yard range to get my targets carrying a 19 lb Desert Tech and a 50 lb pack. This gentleman may be able to do more than you think.

Not helpful but thanks anyway.
Maybe new guys to the sport aren't allowed.
Or maybe they were looking for opinions on a longer range round.
P.S. been shooting since I was 7.

Ya just put folks like that on ignore..........he added nothing to this thread.
Some folks are learning from this thread ......so you are helping.
I'm older than you and am looking at a 30-06 tomorrow.......been hunting 57 years. From 22 thru 7-300 Weatherby...........development done in the 1950s later became the 7 STW and up to 475 caliber.
the 30-06 I'm looking at is a Steyr.
Do you reload?

30-06 is an excellent choice . Bullet selection is very respectable. I'd bet money that a 30-06 is probably more capable of shooting long range than most of the shooters anyhow.
When I was a teenager and was starting to help dad reload he told me that if you want the best bullet selection available stick with a 30 cal . I'd say the old man pretty well nailed that on the head.
And yeah I know the 6.5 bullets can be blown through a Dixie straw and kill elk sized game out to a mile 🤣🤣
Yup. More 1/2" rifles than 1/2" shooters.........

I'll second that one, "What's this age stuff got to do with anything sucka!!!" 👍 ;)🤣🤣 But.........he's probably correct about walking that 600-700 yards to retrieve the animal.
That's why God and Man got together and designed Son In Laws, Stepsons, quads, and Children...."OH LOOK BOYS.....FETCH NOW....thata good boy...Fetch!

I have ordered a 30-06 custom from Weatherby about a month ago.
I plan on shooting for fun and mostly targets.
But I will be learning to hunt. At 67 I figure it's never to late to learn, and I have a very experienced stepson to help.
(ELK)
But with what I'm seeing these days i must have chosen the wrong cartridge.
Maybe I should have gone 6.5 Cm or the new 6.8.
Or the 270 weatherby.
Your opinions are the reason for the post.

R-Dog:
You sure opened the "can" on this one boy .............. What an entrance, WELCOME !!
The 30-06 Springfield cartridge was first commercially offered in 1908. Not in a bolt action rifle, but in the 1895 Model Winchester lever gun. Ever wonder how many '06 cartridges were produced in 112 years of commercial production ? How many of them do you figure were used successfully on Elk ?

A book written by J.Y. Jones tells about his quest to take all the huntable species and sub-species in North America with one rifle chambered in 30-06 Springfield. I believe it was a Remington 700.

That book is: One Man, One Rifle, One Land by J.Y. Jones.

Hi New Guy, I shoot Weatherby's too. My Hunting buddy also has a Weatherby Accumark, in 30-06. What a great rifle that is. I make hand loads for him , so I shoot that rifle a lot. I have a Weatherby ( Mark V ) Ultralight in .270 Win, which is my "Go To Deer Rifle " and Weather Mark V Deluxe in .270 Weatherby Mag. and another one in .300 Weatherby Mag. I love them all , but my friends Weatherby mark V Accumark , in 30 -06, with the #3 fluted S/S barrel is a super rifle. If I was only allowed to own ONE RIFLE (Lord Forbid!! ) , I think it would be a hard choice between my Ultralight in .270 win and his 30 -06 . Enjoy your 30 -06 rifle, its one of the top , time tested game cartridge's ever made. By the way, consider 150grn to 165 grn bullets for deer !!! Big tough bullets (180 to 200 grn ) for Moose and Elk . You have so many choices with a 30-06 . Enjoy it and get good with it!!!!

If I were still hunting elk, I'd still use an 06. There is no animal in North or South America that is too big or tough for an 06. I've taken bear, elk, deer, goats, antelope, you name it. You sir, made an excellent choice.

My first precision rifle is chambered for 30-06. I grew up hunting with it that cartridge, it's easy to load and it felt like a safe choice. My gun wears a 24" Shilen barrel with PA M41 muzzle brake. My preferred loads for the gun are similar, Berger 185 Juggernauts and Hybrids over appropriate powder charges of H4350 in Hornady brass and a CCI BR2 primer give 2820fps and 2805fps respectively and routinely and almost invariably produce half and sub half MOA 5 shot groups to 600 yards. Occasionally I have the opportunity to shoot as far as 1135 yards depending on the rotation of the cattle heard on the property and have been able to achieve similar results at those ranges, atmospheric variables and lack of seat time limit me there. Suffice it to say, the 30-06 is capable. The good folks producing the Mark and Sam after work YouTube channel are proof of that! He has illustrated its capability at distances in excess of 2800 yards. Load well, sweat the details, and enjoy!

The 30-06 will be fine for hunting and target shooting. It mostly depends on the range, game, and target distances you plan on shooting at. I've never hunted WA but most of the areas I visited were pretty dense forests rich with game. Of course you have open prairies where the shots will be longer, but if you hunt mostly in the forests the 30-06 will do just fine. One benefit of the 30-06 these days is everyone makes ammo for it.
