Is a supressor a silencer?

No but they're often called silencers even though they don't make things silent outside of hollywood; yes, with the right paperwork; sometime back in like 1934?

edited to add: I see your location is Mexico, so my answers to #2 and #3 do not really apply- I have no idea about laws down there.

I have a ranch in California and I do my hunting up there. It is too hard to get a legal weapon down here. I just noticed that after many years of no silencers available, all of a sudden everybody wants to get a "supressor."

I think they are the same but for terminology.
They are heavily restricted in Australia but have practically little restriction in Africa and New Zealand.
If you run subsonic ammo they will be much quieter bit I haven't done it in practice.
I used one with hunting in South Africa and it quietened down the crack and reduced recoil.
I believe they like them to preserve hearing and quieten the shots.
The same one with a subsonic load that is below 1040fps or something won't have the sonic boom or the crack. Therefore increasing the effectiveness of the supressor.
I think silencers are used by assassin's in the movies so portrayed as bad or for something like that making them restricted.

I do believe suppressors are illegal in California. And that is a bummer because I sure love hunting and shooting with them. If I remember correctly 8 states have bans on suppressors but I am not qualified to be a source of legal advice.

The forms from the ATF call them silencers. All Form 3's I've received and Form 4's I've filled out per "their" definition. Not sure if listing suppressor under "type" of firearm would cause delay in paperwork or not.

Silencers and/or suppressors are illegal to posses in CA. I'm in CA and have done a little homework and the answer is DO NOT GET CAUGHT WITH ONE IN THE STATE. I am pretty sure it is a felony (not 100% sure) and that means if you get caught and it is a felony you will be giving up your rights to own a gun too.
The politicians in this state want to take away our ability to own guns and hunt so don't be surprised if they make more laws in the future to limit your ability to acquire different firearms and accessories

a buddy of mine has a dummy "can" or suppressor on his rifle. Just for looks and had zero function and he got harassed at a range by off duty LEO so bad one time that he took it off and will not put it back on. I do believe that if he wasn't at a gun range with a lot of people surrounding the LEO telling him to F off he would have been arrested....a lot of LEO in CA do not have a great understanding of firearms. It was pretty clear when he pulled the trigger with the dummy suppressor it was loud and not real but the LEO had no idea because it looked like one

I shoot 22 LR subsonic suppressed and it's not silenced but darn near. Snap of the firing pin and bullet report is all I hear. All my main rifles I shoot are turned for suppressors.

to the government and democrats, they are silencers. they completely silence the firearm and you as a law abiding citizen have no right to own them. if they were readily available, they would somehow make guns even more dangerous.

to the folks that own them, they are suppressors. depending on barrel length, they are bulky and cumbersome to get in and out of a deer stand. they quiet the rifle, but they are still loud. you can shoot a bolt gun without ear pro but shooting a semi auto rifle is still painful (in my opinion).

Term is interchangeable and you cannot possess them in California or you will be dealing with a Felony charge.

U.S.C. § 1326 makes it a crime to unlawfully reenter, attempt to unlawfully reenter, or to be found in the United States after having been deported, ordered removed, or denied admission. This crime is punishable as a felony with a maximum sentence of two years in prison.

Funny thing about priorities on what is enforced eh..??.. but I digress.
